Tyran Brown – #Hardwork {Album Review}

1.Intro

A solid intro track with props from GOOD Music’s Malik Yusef. The simple piano beat lets Tyran Brown’s voice tell his story of passion, struggle, and #HardWork. It sets the tone for the rest of the mixtape.

2. Dedication (Mayweather)

Upbeat and anthemic, Tyran raps about his confidence and dedication to achieving his dreams. Thrashing drums and a dense, synthesized horn section makes this feel like a powerful overture to the journey Tyran is about to take us on. I feel like the only thing missing on this track is a few choice grunts from Ricky Rozay. Maybe GOOD Music can hook that up for the remix though????

3.MEEE ft. Malik Yusef

The single for the mixtape. The booming trunk thumper is perfect for cruising down Crenshaw (I think they may actually do that in the video?). Staccato beeps and syncopated snare hits ride above the deep kick drum. Tyran has “flow for that ass.” And Malik dropping a few words at the end of the track certainly doesn’t hurt, plus the beat gets to rock out longer, California to the fullest.

4.Point of No Return

Tyran has reached the point of no return and can’t worry about the naysayers and those who doubt him. A laid back track that has subtle changes and warm tones almost feels Canadian (Can we get Drizzy on the remix though???). Tyran has one foot in the past and one in the future as he reflects on youthful mistakes while taking hold of his future.

5.I Would Say

Without a doubt, the most revealing and emotional track of the entire project. Confronting strained family relationships, fake friends, and first loves lost, Tyran slows things down to really get his feelings across. The emotive, electric chords gently pass by, as the recessed drums feel echo-like, similar to the memories Tyran recounts.

6.Dat Life

You will have to sit and ask yourself “Am I bout Dat Life?” The party, the homies, the girls, and all the other things that make “Dat Life,” what it is. Even if you aren’t bout dat life, you can still dance like it, or turn up the trill-ass track in your car and pretend to be.

7.Gotchu Alone

Very few rap songs make it onto my “12:01 Midnight Nasty Mix.” This track has. Tyran details the intense anticipation and explicit seduction he experiences from, and induces on a sensual young lady. This is the perfect track for that trip from the club back to the hotel, the crib, or directly to the backseat of your ride. Soaring strings and patient plucks from the guitar make this my favorite track on the mixtape. You may need to smoke a cigarette after hearing this song.

8.Turn It Out

Gentleman, prepare your Washingtons! Pure stripper music. Best one liner on the entire mixtape: “If you ratchet and you know it, clap that ass.” Need I say more?

9.Keep Up

Tyran Brown professes that other people need to keep up with him. Swagged out like the one of the “top five most beautiful people of all time,” that he claims to be, Tyran is not afraid to flaunt his style and challenge everyone else to get on his level. The beat is hype and just a lil bit nasty. Swagetty Swag Swag all the way home.

10.Wanna Roll (La La La)

Something to nod your head to. Similar to the sentiments of Lupe’s “Paris, Tokyo,” Tyran Brown promises he can make room for the right female if she is a ride or die girl. Probably some of the cleanest lyrical delivery on the album, Tyran admits he is on a mission, and his flow is evident of that fact.

11.Can’t Stop Now

Another anthem that feels like Tyran’s battle cry as he attempts to break into the world of Hip-hop. It is pretty epic, and definitely motivational. The subtle horn section chanting in the background reminds me of the theme from Rocky. I don’t think Tyran will be stopping now or anytime soon.

12.In The Moment

The production on “In The Moment,” has an element of acid jazz/downtempo electro that feels very nice. It’s all about enjoying life and living in the moment on this track. “All I can really see is ass, titties, and red cups,” Tyran recalls. Sounds like one hell of a moment. Must have been at some party Tyran was at while attending UNLV.

13.Red Carpet Entrance

The fame and fortune of the red carpet has always been alluring. The thing that alludes most people is the amount of #HardWork that has to be done to reach that red carpet. Perhaps a letter to himself, Tyran dreams about the bright lights and riches that come with the Hollywood lifestyle. He also addresses the struggles and disappointments that come along with it. “Red Carpet Entrance,” is a great exit for Tyran Brown’s #HardWork.

Now that we have heard his #HardWork, when will we get to see the #Rewards?
