Welcome to the ‘Weekly Grind’ where GroundSounds Editor-in-Chief Jake Craney recaps the week in music, featuring the latest album releases, tracks, and recommendations. Plus, he keeps you up to date on GroundSounds’ exclusive music news and interviews.

My 18 year-old self would have loved this week. New albums by Fall Out Boy and Paramore? #poppunkheaven.

Turns out, my 28 year old self enjoyed it just as much. FOB and Paramore are very different bands now, but hey, I’d hope they would be after 10 years. I’m certainly a much different guy.

Fall Out Boy came roaring back onto the scene with Save Rock And Roll, an expansive theatrical monster of an album littered with guest stars such as, Big Sean, Courtney Love and the legendary Elton John. The album isn’t quite out yet, but it was up for streaming this week so I dove in immediately. Right from the get-go, you can tell FOB is bringing something new to the table. “Phoenix” opens like the trailer of a Hollywood action film and you can sense a certain edge to the band that prevails throughout the album. “Alone Together” and “Just One Yesterday” display the best parts of what 2013 Fall Out Boy brings to the table. The album overall is incredibly likeable and begs for repeat listens. The highlight for me personally is the final three tracks. “Young Volcanoes” is my favorite track on the album and the song I find myself going back to over and over. “Rat A Tat” follows with a youthful energy that almost trips over itself with excitement. As soon as Courtney Love opens with “It’s Courtney, Bitch,” you prepare yourself for some awful trainwreck of a song…but thankfully—the song and Love’s parts actually work really well. The closer “Save Rock And Roll” featuring Elton John is a fantastic end to an excellent album.

Paramore, after some lineup changes, made an ambitious lengthy self-titled album. This ain’t the sassy pop-punk you’ve come to know. Hayley and Co. switch tempos, still bring the heat at times, and throw us some curveballs. The result? A solid album. Some swing-and-misses (Houston Astros style), but for the most part, a great Paramore release. The highlight is the sequence of “Last Hope,” “Still Into You,” and “Anklebiters.” These three songs showcase where the band has been, where it is now, and where it is capable of going. I would have scrapped a couple songs on the album along with at least two of the interludes and made it a more compact and strong 12-13 song album, but nonetheless, Paramore delivers with a quality release.

GroundSounds On The Grind video interviews kept rolling this week with Zack from The Braces and Zach from Cayucas. Two very different musicians and two interesting interviews. Great guys. Next week I’ll be interviewing a band I’ve been listening to since high school (long-ass time): The Classic Crime. Excited to meet these guys and chat.

This week was also the first full week of the now open GroundSounds Shop online. In case you missed it, just click on the little graphic on the top right and you’ll see our watches. We don’t have the pics up quite yet, but we actually have 14 different color bands. They’re stylish and interchangeable, so if you are a watch person or you just want to help the GS cause, pick one up. We truly appreciate the support!

New Song Of The Week:

Sorry new Jimmy Eat World song…I’m just digging this track so much. It takes my already terrible dance moves and brings them to a whole new level of awkward.
