Welcome to the ‘Weekly Grind’ where GroundSounds Editor-in-Chief Jake Craney recaps the week in music, featuring the latest album releases, tracks, and recommendations. Plus, he keeps you up to date on GroundSounds’ exclusive music news and interviews.

Another great week for new music. I got a taste of the new Tommy & The High Pilots album Only Human. I’ll have a review for that up soon, but it’s a terrific album. Keep your eye on that band.

Tommy & The High Pilots – “Only Human”

Modern Vampires of the City, the new album from Vampire Weekend is growing on me. Some interesting songs, some hits and misses, but overall, I absolutely love some of the songs. “Unbelievers,” “Ya Hey,” “Finger Back,” and “Everlasting Arms” are all getting tons of plays for me this week.

 Vampire Weekend – “Ya Hey”

The biggest news for me this week was the new album from The Wonder Years was put up for streaming. While my tastes have gradually shifted to more of the alternative pop style (The 1975, Youngblood Hawke, The Neighbourhood, Lydia, etc), The Wonder Years are listed as one of my “Favorite Bands” in my profile for a reason. It’s the music I truly resonate with, the energy, the passion, and most of all, the lyrics. Dan Campbell has had an uncanny ability to mirror much of what is going on in my life over the past three years. Three years, three albums, and a constant soundtrack I connect with.

I’m not even going to delve into dissecting tracks on The Greatest Generation, it’s just too damn good as a whole. It takes everything I’ve loved about their last two albums and simply adds more elements for me to enjoy. Somehow, they’ve topped two of my favorite albums and made the best album of their career. I’ll be singing these lyrics for a long time. If you’re a fan of pop-punk, punk, rock, or any music with a lot of heart—do yourself a favor and pick up The Greatest Generation.

I’d also like to recommend I Wish More People Gave A Shit by You Me & Everyone We Know. Ben Liebsch has been and continues to be one of my all-time favorite lyricists. He knows how to write a compelling song, and he keeps churning them out. Check out the 4 song EP right here:
