Search The City is back and ready to unleash their new album. GroundSounds caught up with the band to discuss new music, the new lineup, and touring plans.

GS: You underwent a significant lineup change a couple years ago. What was the biggest factor in determining whether to keep the name Search The City or create a new name?

Alex: We came up with the name, Search the City, when we were 15 and we all hated it, but to abandon the name would be to abandon our lifes work. Jim and I have been playing in this band for as long as I remember so why would we want to change the name? There were reasons to, but we have such a dedicated fanbase, so I don’t see why we needed to.

-You set up a fundraiser to help fund your new album, including some clothing, posters, and a chance to sing on one of your songs. What kind of response did you get from fans and did you reach your goal?

Travis: We came really close, but just missed our goal. We are quite happy with the turnaround from our fans. They were completely thoughtful and generous with their donations and extremely patient, as well. All the gang vocal  participants were really stoked and I feel honored and that is really humbling.

-Speaking of that clothing, can fans still purchase these items?

Joe: No. Those items were for the fundraiser only but we do have a webstore.

-Many fans fell in love with your debut album A Fire So Big The Heavens Can See It. Do you feel any obligations to continue the progression of this album, or in the wake of lineup changes, are you more inclined to create something brand new and let that stand as the new sound of STC?

Alex: The new record is called Flight, and for me that means a flight of ideas. It’s a perfect metaphor for what our process was in writing it. We jumped around a lot, wrote great songs and found the new voice of the band. Were excited as a band to progress musically.

-The new demos posted on your site sound great! How has the writing process been different for the new material?

Jim: Well, we have new members so we had to figure out to work cohesively and it worked! We love the record, every song is great and we’re happy.

-What are your plans for both touring and new music in 2013?

Joe: For the rest of the year we plan on touring on the new record once its released.

-What bands are you guys listening to right now? What bands/musicians have influenced you the most?

Band: Jimmy Eat World, Thrice, U2, Pierce the Veil, Mae, Coldplay, The Jealous Sound

-In what way has being from Detroit affected or influenced your band?

Alex: Some of us work in Detroit and I live there. Being a city that was once something and then fell apart is very close to what happened to Search the City so its good to rebuild

-What is one thing that nobody knows about Search The City?

Guitar player, Alex runs a successful international design business called Match & Kerosene. Check it out at www.matchandkerosene.com

-Where should fans go for updates on your new album and your tour dates?
