California based singer/songwriter Jordan Corey has been on the grind! Her latest EP Do Me Wrong, has actually done her right, and now fans can expect her next EP Trilogy to drop in July! GroundSounds had the opportunity to catch up with this rising star, check out the interview below!

You have such a distinct sound, who have been your musical influences growing up?

I grew up listening to a lot of Motown and Classic Rock. My first band was a classic rock cover band so I’d say my greatest influences are from that era of music. Its funny you mention having a “distinct sound.” I have always felt, above all else, that the most important aspect of a great artist is in their ability to create distinctive sounds and qualities in their music. My favorite and most influential artists have always been those individuals who are able to “standout” by creating music that is beautiful, boundless, and distinctive.

You have so many Youtube hits from your covers, what advice do you have for other artists trying to reach out to the public?

I used to really hate YouTube. When I first started posting covers I feared that I would only be known as a “YouTube cover artist.” I’m happy to say that after 3 years on the Tube I have been able to establish myself as an artist and elevate myself musically. For artists just starting out I would say utilize YouTube – let it be a space to experiment creatively and interact directly with fans. My favorite tweet I have ever read was from this band that said, “Music is my drug and YouTube is my dealer.” Wise words.

Can you tell us about your writing process?

When I was fourteen and first started writing I used to sit at my piano and plunk out notes while creating vocal melodies. Now it is not SO different…I basically do the same thing, but nowadays I am experimenting with different instruments and sounds.

So I hear you are going on your first tour.  When and where is this happening?

Yes! I’m excited to get on the road. The tour is a California coastal tour, hitting the major cities from Sacramento to San Diego and it will begin fall of this year! I am so grateful to my fans that supported and donated to my Kickstarter – they made this tour possible.

What is the inspiration behind “Do Me Wrong”?

The record is about a tumultuous relationship I had been in for a few years. While writing the record I had a lot of frustration and anger towards this person. Looking back on it now the writing for that record was very cathartic.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be?

You know, I always get this question and feel that I am never prepared for it! Who I would like to collaborate with changes everyday. Today, right now, I am vibing on Disclosure…I would LOVE to do a collab with them.

How has the Santa Barbara lifestyle affected your musical style?

Well it certainly kept me in happy spirits! UCSB is what brought me to Santa Barbara, so I can’t say the city affected my music style as much as the simple act of growing up did.

Your EP Trilogy comes out in July what can fans expect? Do you have a favorite song on this upcoming project?

Trilogy has been long in the making! Fans can expect a more developed sound and a continuation from “Do Me Wrong” into a new chapter of my life. Each song will be released with a music video as well – I feel the project is as much a visual experience as it is an auditory one. So there will be a lot of exciting art to sink your teeth into. I do have a favorite song on the project, but I think I will save the reveal for when the record is dropped!

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

In 5 years I see myself playing, writing, creating music. I can’t say what the future holds, but as long as I am able to express myself creatively and continue making music that people enjoy, I am a happy girl.
