Ray Wright, Serk Spliff, and Manu Li spit hot fire, together they form the LA based hip-hop group Warm Brew. With an emphasis on the groove, soul, and funk, they are definitely three dudes to look out for. Put them on your music radar now, and check out our exclusive interview below.
So what’s the story behind Warm Brew how did you guys come together and form the group?
We formed the group fairly easy , I hit up Ray on AIM back in high school, and we made a few songs, never to be heard by the public until our greatest hit album. Ray went to college for one year and when he returned we got straight to work on Warm Brew, Serk joined the group shortly after we made the song ‘Doin’ It Right’.
How did you come up with the name ‘Warm Brew’?
Niggas dared me to drink a hot ass beer, I did, proceeded to spit hot fire. Now we on.
What inspires your music?
The struggle, the hustle, and the desire to see the rest of this fucked up world.
What other musicians/bands have heavily influenced your sound?
So many, 213, A Tribe Called Quest, Mac Dre, 2pac, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and TLC. typical stuff.
Can you tell us about your song “Wanna Get High”?
Ray came to the studio excited as fuck, like, I got this song. I wrote a weird verse at first, Hugh’s verse was great, and Serk’s needed work. Serk and I rewrote our part. and we just meshed. The hook was the inspiration. We broke our necks hearing it, after he laid it down.
What was it like attending Santa Monica High School together?
Hahaha. We weren’t there together very long. I left to Malibu High after my Sophomore year. Taylor spent one year in Las Vegas. So there isn’t much there. Serk won CIF in Futbol though.
Do you guys have a favorite strain of Mary Jane?
Two letters. OG
Can you tell us a little bit about your writing process? Do you guys start with a beat first? Or an idea/concept?
We start with a beat then an idea. But then sometimes we start with an idea, then a beat. Shit be bangin’ when it come together though.
Can you tell us a little bit about your new album The Ride? What was it like working on this?
It was therapy. It always is. Just going through life, Music is what makes it beautiful.
What is Warm Brew currently working on? What’s next?
More music. more shows. seeing more and recording on the way. More collaborations with more down to earth artist like The Come Up Boys, Rome Fortune and Trinity.
