English singer/songwriter Lucy Rose has been topping the charts in England with her debut album ‘Like I Used To’, and now it has finally come stateside.  Lucy is currently on a full North American tour bringing comfort and joy with her folksy pop music. GroundSounds recently had the chance to catch up with Lucy for an exclusive interview check it out below.

You’re coming back to the states! A full North American Tour was just announced, what you do you enjoy most about America/Canada? What cities do you look forward to seeing?

Let’s be honest, the food is bloody good and we’re currently trying to out do each other on the burger tally we’ve got going. Favourite cities, well they are all so different so it’s hard to pick a favourite. We all love LA and really excited about going to Portland and Las Vegas. Also my mum said North Carolina is amazing, so looking forward to that.

Your debut album ‘Like I Used To’ was just released in the US on Sept. 17th, what has it been like working on this project?

The album itself was actually pretty easy to record. I was still unsigned so we recorded it in my parents family room with gear borrowed or lent. Getting it released in America has been one of the hardest things about this album. It’s felt like an impossible task, so I’m just really pleased that it’s actually happening and people can get it now.

What gives you inspiration, whether it is a person, place, or thing?

Not to sound cheesy, but everything.  I mean, everywhere you go you can probably see something that’s inspiring or made you feel something. Obviously people around you and books and films and plenty of music helps.

What was it like growing up in Warwickshire?

Yeah lovely. Definitely enjoyed growing up in the countryside as I was a real tomboy so digging in the fields and fishing kept me occupied. There wasn’t much going on though and I never really found the music scene there, I sort of headed straight to London.

Do you have favorite lyrics from any of the songs that you have ever released?

God, I definitely can’t choose a favourite lyric, I’m not even sure I think my lyrics are any good. You’ll have to ask someone else that. Sorry.

How did you come up with the album title ‘Like I Used To’, is there a special meaning behind it?

Well, it was the lyric is two of my favourite songs, Shiver and Gamble and I felt it represented the album quite well.

Do you have a most memorable performance?

Last night in Toronto cause it was the first time I ever stood up. The bar stool has gone for now.

You recently were in the studio recording new music, can you tell us anything about your latest tunes?

Hmmm… I’m not sure cause I’m not exactly sure what to make of them myself at the moment. I’ve only heard one and the other was done in a bit of a rush before I left so haven’t heard that one finished yet. We’ll see, think they’re a little bit more full and big.

What advice would you give to aspiring singer/songwriters?

Work at your craft, I’m constantly trying to improve my songwriting and I think it’s something that can be worked on forever.

What are you currently listening to?

Ghostpoet, Foals, Feist, Grizzly Bear.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Getting older, hopefully still playing.
