She is full of sass and swag, you could say Lizzo is a real live wire!  She found success working with The Chalice and GRRRL PRTY;  Now with the release of her debut solo album LIZZOBANGERS, it is clear that she is a force to be reckoned with. GroundSounds recently chopped it up with the Minneapolis rapper/singer for an exclusive interview, check it out below.

For those just being introduced to your music can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you got started creating music?

Hi, my name’s Lizzo. Detroit born, Houston bred and Minneapolis based. Started playing music when I was 12 (flute, piano, writing), started rapping when I was 13, started singing when I was 19.

What is one thing everyone should see or do in Minneapolis?

See a Doomtree show, go to eatstreet.

Can you tell us about the creative process and inspiration behind your track “Batches and Cookies”?

It came from a book idea I had called, ‘Get it, Batch’. One day Sophia Eris and I were walking down the street and I said, “I got my batches and cookies” and she told me to write that down. Here we are!

What was it like working on the music video and working with Sophia Eris?

Super fun and random. The director Ryan Kron Thompson is amazing to work with, everything came from one spur of the moment idea to another. We’re currently working on the next video together!

What are you currently listening to?

I normally listen to my friends’ music, (pony bwoy, polica, sean anonymous, greg grease…) but right now for inspiration I’ve been listening to Good kid mAAd city and Nothing was the Same.

What was the experience like bringing your album LIZZOBANGERS to fruition? What was one of the most difficult and most enjoyable parts of  the process?

Ryan Olson, Lazerbeak, and I were relieved to finally have the music out. We’ve been listening to it, mixing it, and prepping it for almost a year now. That’s the most difficult part though, and now it belongs to the world.

What people, places, or things, have helped to shape you as a person?

My family made me. Blood and chosen. My mother and father were and still are huge influences, they allowed me to create at a very young age. They told me I was capable of anything. I will always give love to Cornrow Clique for making me who I am, they were my closest, oldest friends and will always have a piece of my heart. Houston, TX definitely gave me the appreciation of culture and knowledge that I don’t know I’d have if I still lived in Detroit, or if I lived in a more fast paced environment.

Do you have any life advice that you could share with us?

Ha! It’s still going and it moves on.

You are currently on tour, what cities have been amazing and what cities are you looking forward to checking out?

Toronto blew my mind, it has the best pho and architecture! We just left L.A. and I fell in love with the weather and beautiful people. Pennsylvania, I know it’s not a city but I enjoyed the rolling hills and small town vibe of the place. Obviously, Paris is a big one for me, I can’t wait to visit. I’ve always wanted to move there.

After the tour what are your plans? What’s next?

Release party/homecoming show in Minneapolis Dec 28th! And more work!
