Two weeks ago Lissie was a completely unfamiliar name. Thankfully I am now well-aware of the Illinois’ singer-songwriter-rocker-performer.

On Monday I was treated to a nearly two-hour performance from Lissie at The Fonda in Hollywood. On a cold Monday night the place was still packed to see her, and now I know why.

Opening for Lissie was Kopecky Family Band, from Nashville. They were fantastic, with a variety of styles and a variety of instruments. Their songs were impressive live and I look forward to checking out more of their music. Go discover their music here.

Lissie came on stage with her band and her unbelievably compelling voice took the crowd over from the opening notes. She weaved effortlessly from acoustic and softer alternative to heavy rock. Her earnest songwriting really shined through and captivated the crowd. Songs I had never heard before I was suddenly relating to and wanting to sing along with.

Her range can perfectly complement a softer ballad or a hard-driving anthem. She even threw in a cover of Drake’s “Just Hold On” (which worked surprisingly well in rock-form) and Kid Cudi’s “Pursuit Of Happiness” for good measure!

Lissie has excellent stage presence and energy. She knows when to take a second and chat with the crowd and her personality on stage in endearing. Without seeming the slightest bit too talkative, I now feel like I know her story and background much better than most acts I see. The biggest takeaway from Lissie’s show at The Fonda was that I saw not just great songs or a great show, but a great performance.

She released her new album Back To Forever in October, check it out here and make sure to stay updated with her touring plans for 2014 on her website. Out of all the shows I’ve seen this year, Lissie was one of the most pleasant surprises. I would see her again tomorrow if I could.
