Gathering an eclectic range of styles Malka Spigel is back on the grind with her upcoming EP Gliding.

Gliding is a transitional record, or perhaps a prologue, for Spigel: this is very much the work of an artist on the threshold of a new creative cycle.

GroundSounds was fortunate enough to catch up with Malka for an exclusive interview. We discussed her latest works, inspirations and more, check it out below.

Can you tell us about the writing and creative process in regards to your latest EP Gliding?

After playing some live gigs to promote my Album Everyday Is Like The First Day that came out in 2012 we felt that we should do some recordings that capture the sound of the live band. Since the members of the band live in London, Berlin and Tel-Aviv it wasn’t practical to work in the same space at the same time so each player sent their parts and Colin worked on it in our studio. However the sound we got in the end is very much a reflection of how we sounded together on stage.

What inspired the name Gliding?

Well one of the songs on the EP is called Strum Gliding but also we felt that the music had a flowing gliding quality.

What was it like working with Colin on this project versus Everyday is Like the First Day?

In the end it’s not very different, Colin and I work on many different projects but the way we collaborate and relate is very similar.
We kind of complete each other, Colin takes care of all the technical stuff, he can spend hours working on a song, I’m kind of the opposite, I don’t have much patience, I want to do everything fast, and as soon as the idea is there.

What music are you currently listening to?

One of my favourite bands at the moment are Younghusband, I also love Toy, Warpaint and Liars.

From Tel Aviv to France, to Amsterdam…it seems as if you are always on the go.  Where are you currently residing and why? Also, where was Gliding recorded?

Actually it’s from Tel-Aviv to Amsterdam to Brussels to London, and now we are in the process of moving to Brighton. Gliding was recorded in London, Berlin and Tel-Aviv. Although we do most of our recordings in our home studio it’s always great and inspiring to work in other places/spaces.

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your track “Hacol Zaram Beyachad?”

When I lived in Amsterdam with my band Minimal Compact we always moved and lived in quite rough squats, in one of the places I use to sit on the roof dreaming and looking at the world with my cat fido, it was quite an insecure excistence but I remember feeling very harmonious and happy. This song was originaly on my first  album Rosh Balata, which was also the first release on our swim ~ label.

What people, places and books have inspired you the most?

I can’t point to one place or one person that inspired me, traveling always inspires me, I love being on tour, I love the freedom and randomness of touring, it’s always great meeting people on the road because you are much more open than you would be at home. I’m reading Just Kids by Patti smith, it’s really good so far, but it’s so hard to read with all the online stuff taking your attantion!

When you are not creating music, what do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Taking endless photos, it’s an obsession, everywhere I look I see pictures, I do it in a totally in an instinctive way, I started taking pictures with the analogue Lomo camera and I was part of the first online lomo community, lomo was all about shooting and not thinking which suited me very well.  I had my photos in some exhibtions and people always tell me I should make a photography book, which I intended to do one day. I post daily on instagram (mayanewman) and Facebook.

What do you enjoy most about performing live?

The sound & the audience reaction. playing and sharing the experience with other people and taking the risk that things might go wrong. I also like the way every gig is different, it’s about being spontaneous and free.

It seems as if you are on the threshold of a new creative cycle, what can fans expect/look forward to in the future?

We are working on a new Githead album, a band I’m in with Colin Newman, Robin Rimbaud and Max Franken. I’m very excited with how it sounds so far, and hopefully we will tour when it comes out. Also planing some live gigs in Tel-Aviv but I can say much about that yet.
