Tycho at The Fonda Theatre

Brendon Goldwasser

On the second Thursday night of May, a devoted crowd was treated to the fine performance of Tycho at The Fonda Theatre on Hollywood Blvd. This was an exceptionally tight show. Scott Hansen, professionally known as Tycho, is an American ambient music artist and producer, who is also known as ISO50 for his photographic and design works. His first albums Sunrise Projector and Dive came out a few years ago and was mainly a mix of ambient, chill, instrumental soundscapes/beats, mainly produced and recorded all by Tycho himself.

For his most recent release Awake, he has taken his sonic art to a whole new canvas, with real musicians jamming out on stage, making extremely laid-back, ambient/alternative music, with no lyrics or vocal parts. The elements that drive these new songs are those of the most clear, pristine picks of bass and electric guitar, backed up my synth melodies, all of it that grab you and make you move, but not like crazy EDM move, like hypnotized into a head-nodding pattern. I can’t forget the drummer here, because honestly, he kept the whole group together and was really keeping the crowd hyped up and energized.

They started off their set with the upbeat single “Montana,” the second track on his new album (streaming above). From there he mostly played a large majority of his new songs, which isn’t surprising, considering his album was just released. He played a few new, unreleased tunes, as well as some older jams from his first album. This was a great night of music and even though I was there to mainly see Tycho, I also must also mention their awesome opener Gardens & Villa, a solid indie-rock outfit from Santa Barbara. For me, this Tycho show will be added to my favorite performances of 2014 for sure. Check out some more pictures of the show below!
