London based alt-pop duo We The Wild have been on the grind! Ant West and Casey Roarty have been pumping out fresh new tracks and volumes of music at a frenzied pace, and we don’t mind!

The guys are about to drop their highly anticipated Vol. II, GroundSounds caught up with them to talk about their new compilation of music and more, check out our exclusive interview with We The Wild below.

For those just discovering We The Wild, how did you guys come together and start making music?

Our musical roots together go way back to our school days when we were 14 and we’ve been playing in different bands ever since. We’ve been through some pretty outrageous name changes, and made our way through a few genres as we were growing up. But now we are here, and have been playing as We The Wild, for the first time, just the two of us.

What inspired the name We The Wild?

It was actually the first name that we came up with, and after weeks of throwing around other ideas it just stuck. I think it felt right because we didn’t know where our music was headed, and which tangent it could go off in. We pride ourselves on that, creating the unexpected.

What was it like working on your upcoming album Vol. II? Can you tell us about bringing this LP to fruition?

Our writing and recording process merges into one – that’s the best and most productive way in which we can work. We found for Vol II that a lot of the ideas for vocal melodies came from the keys parts that would be hinting for a vocal hook to take over. Sometimes we’d write and produce all the instruments for a track before thinking about vocal arrangements and lyrics. There seems to be no right or wrong for how we write, and every song appears to have a different process behind it. We then took our fully produced ‘demos’ to a studio and recorded live drums, guitars and bass to give it life and the feel of a live band. We think that’s a big part of our sound, and what really brings it to life.

What do you guys enjoy most about performing live?

It was a real challenge putting our recorded music on to stage, and a real learning curve, delving into the endless possibilities of live programming. We don’t approach the recording process with, ‘How are we going to create this live?’, we just create things in the studio and think about it after! For me it’s the joy of playing with our live drummer, George, who really brings an extra layer to our live show, making each and every performance different and exciting.

What are you guys currently listening to?

Ourselves mainly, having just mixed Vol II ourselves in our studio! But apart from that we’ve really been enjoying the new Bombay Bicycle Club record and Dan Croll’s record, who we had the pleasure of touring with this year. We’re both also very excited for the next Coldplay record. There we go, I said it, and I’m not ashamed!

Can you tell us about the creative and writing process for your track “Paper Plane?”

That track was really natural and fun to create. We plugged in my old microkorg synth which we haven’t dug out for a long time, since our 16 year-old pop punk days. We messed around with sounds for a while and decided to go as weird as we could with it, and push the boundaries. We recorded the vocals that evening in my flat, which adds something cool to the vocal sound, singing above the London traffic and horns outside our window.

What do you guys enjoy most about London?

I love that London is such a bustling city. There’s something going on at any time, and there’s never a dull moment. Yes, it has its downfalls and sometimes lonely moments, but growing up in and around this city has definitely helped us make the music we want to make and made us the people we are. We were lucky enough to be grow up in a town that was only a 30 minute train journey West of London, so it was easy to play countless London shows growing up, and what a place it is to play. In my opinion it’s the music capital of the world.

What people and books have inspired you guys most?

I read a lot of Kerouac growing up, and in my early 20s he was a big influence on my outlook on life. There’s something massively freeing about his stories, and how carefree his life seems. We can do whatever we like, when we like and how we like. The wise Bob Dylan once said, “A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and gets to bed at night, and in between he does what he wants to do.”

What is it about the alt/pop that intrigues you guys most?

There are no boundaries with this ‘genre’, which is almost a paradox in itself. We can create one thing and then try something else, something new, and not be tied down by the traditions of other styles of music. There are no limits, just trial and error.

After the album release, what’s next for We The Wild?

After Vol II we are jumping straight onto completing Vol III before writing our album. We expect it will sound different in many ways to Vol II, but who knows where we could head with it…
