Meet Angela Gail and Jeffrey Jacob, two L.A.-based musicians who met through various artists’ circles and came together to form the dark electro-duo In The Valley Below in 2011.
Since then the self-described “sex-wave” rockers have been on the grind, pumping out eerie tracks with brooding soundscapes, recently dropping their new EP ‘Man Girl’.
GroundSounds caught up with In The Valley Below for an exclusive interview to chat about the three most important things in life: music, beer and sex. Check it out below.
For those just discovering In The Valley Below, how did you guys come together and start making music?
Angela: I saw Jeffrey playing a show in LA and I knew he had to be mine.
Jeffrey: She was a hot lesbian and I was a little intimidated.
What inspired the name In The Valley Below?
Angela: The Vagina
What was it like working on your latest EP Man Girl, and bringing it to fruition?
Jeffrey: We were both going through break-ups and financial stress, so this was a welcome escape for us.
Can you tell us about the creative and writing process for “Peaches?”
Angela: Jeffrey came in with the first riff and my verse and it all came very easy after that. We had a lot to get off our chests.
Since you guys brew beer, what are your favorite types?
Jeffrey: We like dark beers. Porters, Stouts.
Can you tell us a little bit about working on your forthcoming full-length The Belt? What can fans expect?
Angela: Both of our fans can expect to be deeply depressed and exhilarated. It’s a bipolar situation.
You are currently enjoying a residency at The Echo, how has this been? Also what do you guys enjoy most about performing live?
Jeffrey: We live right down the street, so we would do this every Monday if we could. It’s a very old school feeling. There should be cigarette girls and tall booths with cocaine.
Angela: Performing live is like bloodletting. It takes a while to get used to, but then you realize how necessary it is.
Can you tell us about bringing the track “Hymnal” to fruition?
Angela: The chorus came to me while driving. It split my heart open.
Jeffrey: It started as a dark acoustic folk song and then the synthesizers ate it.
What do you guys enjoy most about LA?
Angela: The sun.
Jeffrey: The Mexicans
