Goldroom at El Rey Theatre

Brendon Goldwasser

On Saturday night at the historic El Rey Theatre L.A. natives Goldroom took the stage and performed an insanely energetic show to a sold out crowd. Before they went on though, we were treated to a couple really fitting opening acts that are definitely worth mentioning.

L.A.-based Kauf, the first opening act for the evening, did a fine job of getting the crowd warmed up with some nice electronic beats and melodies, while he sang over the top of them. Now, although I wasn’t completely digging the music because it felt like it was missing something, I did enjoy a few of his songs. I’m sure it’s tough to not only be a solo act right now, but being the opener you know most people are discovering you for the first time right then and there. That being said, Kauf was completely professional and grateful for the opportunity to open. He has some solid tracks, too! One of my favorites being “Relocate” off of his 2013 release As Much Again. Fans of acts such as Brothertiger, Darkside, or Millionyoung would enjoy his tunes and live show.

Next up after Kauf was yet another L.A.-based artist, Gavin Turek. She brought the soul and pop. She brought the Solange-like dance moves, but better! Truthfully, she has a great voice, awesome stage presence, and was supported by a really tight, well-rehearsed 3-piece band who looked quite dapper in their clean, matching outfits of white button downs and black ties. She performed a few really incredible songs and one that stood out was “Remember.” Listen to it here.

Finally, it was time for Goldroom, led by frontman Josh Legg. This wasn’t just any regular show, though. They’ve been working on this “new” show and this was their official return show to LA, so that alone led me to believe this would be an epic live experience. The show included fellow Vitalic Noise artist Chela on vocals. There was an awesome guest appearance by the one and only Mereki who was a featured vocalist on the hit single “Only You Can Show Me,” which she came out to sing with Chela. It was pretty cool seeing them both up there towards the end of the show, just having fun on stage and singing their hearts out with the crowd. They also played a large chunk of the tracks off of their 2013 release Embrace, as well as a brand new unreleased track that was super smooth. Check out the photos and be sure to check out take a listen to those opening acts if you haven’t yet. See y’all at the next gig!
