GroundSounds recently caught up with SomeKindaWonderful to discuss how the band formed, the success of their debut single “Reverse,” their upcoming album, and more. Check out the interview below and pre-order the album here!

How did you meet and form the band?

Jordy was out in Ohio to basically cleanse his mind & soul after being beaten up and left heart broken by the music industry in LA.  He happened to be at a bar where Ben and I (Matt) were having a few beers and I was playing a little guitar.  Jordy liked what I was playing and started singing some melodies.  Things felt good so we went to Ben’s studio less than a mile away and a few hours later we had our first single, “Reverse.”

Where did the name SomeKindaWonderful come from?

Pretty much right when we decided that we were going to actually start a band, Jordy knew he wanted to use the word “wonderful” in our name (he may have dreamt the word the night we made “reverse”).   And then adding the “SomeKinda” made sense because it suggests that the music and group is indefinable and different in a way.  Not to mention it has a nice ring to it lol.

“Reverse” has quickly become a huge hit. Tell us about the inspiration for this song and what the experience has been like watching the song gain a huge following?

The lyrics are based on a personal experience of Jordy’s.  It’s a love story of a relationship told in reverse chronological order.  Seeing the song gain the attention and success it has been receiving is been amazing.  It really feels like the start of dreams coming true and we can’t wait to see where this takes us.

Passion Pit did a cool remix of “Reverse.” How did that remix come about?

One day our label, Downtown Records, just let us know that Passion Pit was gonna be doing a remix, and then about a week later they sent it to us.  It’s so flattering to have someone of that magnitude do a remix for our debut single

I saw that you recently filmed a video for “Reverse.” Where did you film it and when can we expect to see it?

The video was directed by the incredible Marc Klasfeld (Google him!) and was shot at a studio in LA in front of green screen.  They are currently doing a ton of special effects and crazy post production stuff to put it all together.  It should be out first week of July

You also do some awesome covers (California Love, Juicy). How do you guys decide on a song to cover? Any plans for new covers?

When we chose what covers to do, we knew we wanted to do songs that are iconic and not in a genre typically associated with our sound.   We figured that would force us to think outside of the box and make something really interesting.    Since we all are hip hop fans, we thought “California Love” and “Juicy” would be great.   I am not currently at liberty to speak about any possible upcoming covers but if it was up to me it would def be a cover of KISSED BY ROSE by the legendary SEAL.

Your debut album comes out in a few short weeks. I can’t help but notice the album starts with a song called “Cornbread.” Can you give us some insight into the story of the song “Cornbread”?

“Cornbread” makes a bold statement about modern American society in regards to politics, media, pop music, and of course food.  Basically threes a lot of pre packaged fake bullshit being shoved down our throats everywhere you look.  So Jordy is singing to “eat your cornbread”… something that is simple honest down home cooking, which we could all use today haha.

If you had to choose one song from the album to represent you as a band, which would you choose and why?

Hmmmm… I would have to say that “Police” may best represent our band.  It combines lots of organic instruments (guitars, pianos, drums) along with digital/synthesizer sounds which definitely is a consistent part of our sound.  Of course there’s a lot of depth and room for interpretation in the lyrics as well as some of Jordy’s beloved double entendre.

You are from Ohio, now in LA, correct? Those are our two bases here at GroundSounds. In terms of the local food, what is one thing that Ohio does better than LA, and one thing LA does better than Ohio?

Yea, except for Jordy we are all from Ohio.  I would definitely have to say that LA has the better tacos. Everywhere you turn there is the opportunity to have one of the best tacos you will ever eat, haha.    As for Ohio… I would have to say that we are better at pizza.   Maybe it’s just the area of Ohio I live in, but it feels like there are just so many super good mom and pop pizza places out there.
