As she blurs the lines between indie music, filmic orchestration, and electronic music, Lydia Ainsworth is proving to be a promising artist.

With a deep expressive voice, she has started to unveil an enchanting collection of experimental pop songs, that approach dreams, thoughts, and a search for the unknown.

GroundSounds recently caught up with Lydia for an exclusive interview about her latest tracks and more, Lydia’s upcoming album Right From Real is out 9/30 via Arbutus. Pre-order it here.

For those just discovering your music, can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you got started creating your unique sound?

I started out playing cello at an arts high school but because I was so rubbish at it I turned to composing pieces for my friends to play. So that’s where I began writing music. I then got into film scoring and started to use my voice in those projects more and more and eventually began recording songs.

Can you tell us about the writing and creative process for your track “PSI?”

PSI took a very long to finish compared to the others. Melody and harmony came to me first, that part of songwriting for me is most often instantaneous. Then came the lyrics which I wrote with my lyric partner Matthew Lessner through email. It took some time for me to scan the lyrics to fit the melody. The production is what took the longest. I made so many different versions of this song before landing on the one that is on the album. I was listening to all of the versions with a friend the other day and we were laughing so hard because some were really terrible and embarrassing. I made about 20 over two years and all were very different. The first had a 4 on the floor dance beat with a really caustic aggressive vibe, there was one that was like a Puccini aria. All very weird and unnatural sounding, none of them felt authentic and honest. When I finally arrived at the current version things just seemed to click. It will probably keep evolving though as I play it out live.

What inspired the album title ‘Right From Real?

‘Right From Real’ is a line from ‘PSI’:

Feeling things we’ve known but never seen
Hollow twigs that snap beneath the beam
Separates us in our minds as if our passions could divine
Sign from seal
Right from real

The sentiment of the song and that line specifically describes the feeling I was chasing with the sound of the album – the feeling that the impossible is possible and all around is all around if you only look hard enough.

What music are you currently listening to?

Chris Isaak – Wicked Game

What is it about composing music that you enjoy most?

The search for the unknown and the discoveries that it brings along the way.
