Interview: DJ LimeLightz on his career and what the future holds!

DJ LimeLightz has been on the grind for some time now and is only continuing to blossom and build. Its clear that he has a genuine passion for what he does and that is what separates him from the rest. While originally from Detroit, I’m sure you’ll see this guy traveling the globe with his craft someday. Check out our interview below!

When did you first start DJing & what made you get involved?

right after i graduated high school … i actually grew close to a local DJ named DJ Liquid … was kickin it wit him alot that whole summer leading up to college … crazy cuz he actually passed away right after i had booked him to DJ one of my Parties. All i could remember was Liquid having the club rockin so hard man . . . and sometimes he’d come from being the booth and JIT (detroit dance/footwork) … club would go crazy! And at that point was when i no longer wanted to just Host/MC parties i wanted more control and to DJ. Bought my first equipment off craigslist in like 07′. Two Technics 1200s for the L O. haha!

Where did the name ‘Limelightz’ come from?

When I got out of high school i started an entertainment company called LimeLightz Ent. . . initially it was a way for me to keep ties to all the homies i was close to as we moved on to different colleges.  But it wasnt long that everybody had different agendas and the vision was only mine. As a result i took LimeLightz to the lil town that i was going to college at called Bowling Green State University. All around this time though i was just learning how to DJ or what not … i didnt have a DJ name for the longest. . . so i was like DJ LimeLightz. . . LimeLightz Ent … thats the move thats what it is.  I got booked for a few fashion shows in college and after parties … then once i got my foot in the door i broke some deals with different club owners and LimeLightz grew as a entertainment company and as a DJ.

I’ve seen you work with several different artists over the years…what makes you actually cosign and work with an artist?

Pretty much all the artist you catch me with are those ive been knowing forever … Oba Rowland i met soon i got to college thru mutual homies … I been knowin Big Sean Sayitaint Adubb and the Whole FF since high school so overall more of the relationships i have r organic … i never paid for them or had to reach . . it was jus like this the vision and everybody grew individually over the years . . . so of course it only make sense to remain loyal. As far as the new artist . . .i just salute everybody i feel has that individuality. . . and is focused u kno . . .nobody i hang around r one hit wonders… and thats just off the work ethic alone.

Whats the best venue you’ve ever DJ’d at?

Man its hard to say . . . the Summer Jam shows are always dope man just cuz its the city your raised in and you can let off so many records … classics! No losing ! I did a Rick ross show a few years back that was prolly real dope too . . it was like early mmg days in at the old Detroit Lions stadium (pontiac Silverdome)

Can you name your most favorite event that you’ve ever DJ’d?

i kinda combined this one wit the other one … but i love dj’n concerts and large crowds and partying wit people who love music …

What is your biggest accomplishment thus far?

i’d say just building a brand thats worth something… well respected… when you can do radio… nightclubs … then turn around to do weddings … tours . i mean i could go on and on for real.

Radio is always an accomplishment to me too tho! ive worked for hot 97.3 toledo since college and more recently hot1075 detroit

Do you have a preference to what kind of events you do?

i prefer clubs…. tours … weddings … community events … i guess im not picky … reaction i get from people gives me the motivation to dj anywhere …

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?

the next 5-10 im tryn get on that level like FUnkmaster Flex … people dont realize flex one of the originals 2 drop albums and do the mixtapes … he been droppin those bombs forever … and thats the longevity im looking for! big homies like flex and jazzy jeff … that tour life you know … those are the things im reaching for real heavy over the next 5-10!

How do you feel about the music scene in Detroit?

Detroit got some of the most talented artist in the world im sure of it … they just havent figured out that exact way to be consistent and strategic as we need to be as a whole. Iunno why … but its gettin better im here to help whenever to and its alot of ppl ready to work so i think the music scene real solid …, be watchin for us.

How long have you been on 107.5? How did that come about?

i actually got linked into radio one day on the random i know one time my homie DJ Bj had me cover him … then got a email about mixing for a holiday . cant remember which one just knew i was like helllll yea lets get it! holidays turned into some broadcast from the club … club to 9oclockmixes but im jus humbled about it and trying to get my own show . . . like i said funk flex … drama … whoo kid some of the ppl im lookin up to these days.
