LA based rising pop songstress Kady Z just dropped her highly anticipated acoustic pop EP ‘Ordinary Girl Undone.’ Featuring warm, lush vocals and superlative songwriting the 5 track EP can be purchased here

GroundSounds recently caught up with Kady Z to chat about her latest work, inspirations and more. Check out the exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Kady Z, can you tell us a little bit about your background and getting started with music at an early age?

I guess I grew up around music. My mom is a singer, and I used to perform with her and watch her perform when I was a kid. I taught myself to play the guitar and started writing songs when I was 15, and I have been obsessed ever since.

Can you tell us a little bit about the creative process involved with your EP ‘Ordinary Girl Undone’? What made you decide to make it all acoustic?

I co wrote and recorded the original Ordinary Girl LP with my producer Tone Def. The album sounds very electro with a lot of urban influences and I was listening to a lot of Robyn at the time. She did a couple of her songs acoustically, I guess in a way, you’re covering your own song. Tone and I discussed it and we took a few of the songs and stripped them down. Now as opposed to being very beat driven, they are vocally centered and very chill.

How did you decide on the EP name ‘Ordinary Girl Undone’?

The songs are very stripped down, and it’s very much letting my ‘song hair’ down.

Do you have a typical process for when you write songs? Do you have to be in a particular mindset and mood or does it vary?

It definitely varies in terms of mood. But it’s good to use it. Some days I come in with an idea but Tone already has another idea, and out of those two comes a whole other concept. It’s very all over the place but somehow always works out.

Can you tell us a little bit about the track “Ordinary Girl,” and what it means to you?

My mom is a singer, so I grew up on stage and touring with her all over the world and sometimes it’s easy for people to have misconceptions about what that means. Every girl goes thru the same things no matter who she is or where she comes from: heartbreak, body image, loving for the first time, and that’s what makes us who we are.

What do you enjoy most about Los Angeles? What is one thing every visitor should see or do?

I love the ocean. Everyone needs to see the ocean and smell the salt air!!! It’s very calming and centering.

Have you ever been involved with a crush gone wrong? If so what can you reveal about this experience?

Who hasn’t!!? 😉 I guess love makes us do crazy things!!!! I definitely haven’t been arrested, but I may have gotten a tattoo.

What is it about acoustic pop that attracted you to this sound?

Its fun, and it’s so flexible. There are so many ways you can go with it, while still maintaining ‘your sound’, if that makes any sense. And I love the quiet it brings with it. Yea it’s fun to dance and go wild with some serious bangers, but a lot of the time, there’s a comfort to just hearing someone sing, without too much going on behind it.

What has it been like working with producer ToneDef?

He’s really the best and we understand each other. Very talented and easy going. We have a lot of fun but get a lot of work done. Which is what it’s about. It should be fun, right?

What was the inspiration for your track “Crush Gone Wrong?”

We had the chorus written for awhile, and when we came back to it, Tone and I had to decide if we should go with the obvious direction of a sad, serious love song or a creepy, lighthearted stalker song. And of course, after some convincing on my part, we went with in the creepy direction. Obviously, I’ve never stalked anyone or done anything too wild, but love can make you feel like doing crazy things, or at least fantasize about doing crazy things. It was pretty liberating actually. I feel like a lot of girls have had crushes gone wrong.

Fans are anticipating your upcoming full-length album. What can they expect? Is there a title or possible release date?

Actually next album with be an EP and as of now, no release date is set. It’s definitely a bit of a different musical direction, but it’s still sounds like me and looks like me ;). There may be some adjectives like, ‘body’ and ‘bed’ and ‘crush’ involved, but no titles as of yet. But I think they will love it!!! We are pretty excited!!!
