Album Spotlight: The Big Sleep from The Society Islands

Brendon Goldwasser

Take a listen to the hypnotic new album The Big Sleep from psych-rock artist The Society Islands, the solo project of Cologne, Germany-based singer and multi-instrumentalist Boris Rogowski. His sounds and vibes are exactly the type that get us excited over here at GroundSounds.

The music he creates ranges from dream pop and indie rock to psychedelic folk-rock, including stylistic shifts and mysterious undertones. From song to song, the vocals are smooth and resemble that of David Gilmour or even Eric Clapton. The overall instrumentation and space in the songs is on point. Parts of the album dive into more of a progressive-rock, jam band feel, but they keep it heavy, too. Throughout it all, though, there are catchy guitar licks, quick percussion, and driving bass lines. Track that I would highlight would be the smooth intro “Square 1” and the ominously groovy “Sunday.” I also have to mention the second to last track, which is a beautiful piano ballad “Stargazer.”

The album as a whole can be read as a meditation on impossibilities. There is no way to start over with a clean slate, to change who you are or to make beauty – or even happiness – last forever. We can only hope that we have the determination and bravery to continue searching. Start by streaming the full album below and be sure to stay up with his next moves here.
