How did you get started in music? Was there a specific moment you realized this was what you wanted to pursue?

I come from a family of eight siblings and have an early memory of us driving our fifteen-passenger van from upstate New York to Florida. We did a thousand miles with The Beatles – Greatest Hits cassette on repeat. I was obsessed. I’m still obsessed.

When did you move from NY to Nashville? What do you miss most about NY?

I moved to Nashville in 2011. I miss New York in the fall but that’s about it.

I am constantly impressed with a lot of the new music coming out of Nashville. What is the music scene like there? Why do you think it is such a great place for creative and talented musicians?

Songwriting is a craft and people know that in Nashville. The song is king. I’m constantly challenged to tell a better story, write a better line. In the right circles, Nashville can also be an inviting place. It’s not easy, it’s still the music business but there’s sense of community out here.

Your EP Sweet Talk comes out in November and it is really refreshing and well done. How long have you been writing & recording the songs for the EP and what was your goal for the sound/style of it?

Most of the songs were written last summer, although it’s such a personal album I feel like I’ve been writing it my whole life. We began tracking in January of this year with a commitment to trying things. It was a debut release; it could sound like anything. That was the challenge. What did I want to sound like? A big thank you to my team for letting me experiment until I found what I was looking for.

“The World Is Ours” is one of my personal favorites. What inspired that song?

I wrote “The World Is Ours” a couple months after meeting my girl, Natalie. I remember feeling like we could do anything together, be anything together. I still feel that way. Love who you want to love. That’s what the song’s about.

Where do you draw your inspiration from lyrically? Is there a main theme or source for most of your writing or is it different for each song?

It’s different from song to song. Some things I’d wanted to say but hadn’t been brave enough to. Others, like “This Too Shall Pass,” I’d said but didn’t believe until now. Timing is everything. Not all the songs I write draw from personal experience, but the ones I wrote for this EP do. I feel vulnerable. I feel good.

What are your plans after the EP is released and the early part of 2015?

Touring and writing. The next album is not far off and I’ve got more to say.

I’ve regrettably never been to Nashville or upstate New York. What is one thing I “must do” when I finally make it to both places?

Go to Boldt Castle in upstate New York. It sits on an island in the St. Lawrence River. Go in the fall, it’s beautiful. If you get to Nashville, go to a good “writers-in-the-round.” You’ll hear some great musicians tell some great stories.
