Jakubi at The Mint

Melbourne-based group Jakubi landed in the states a couple weeks ago and finally worked their way down to Los Angeles. They brought some solid grooves and played a really tight set Monday night at The Mint. I remember discovering Jakubi last year and was hooked from the first moment I heard their track “Holiday.” It’s been amazing to watch them grow and develop as a group. It’s even cooler when it comes full circle and they go on tour and stop in LA!

The evening kicked off with opening sets from LA-based Bodhi Rock and Seattle-based artist Manatee Commune. Manatee provided an awesome set of electronic beats and soundscapes, with heavenly samples and upbeat tempos. He is definitely cashing in on the whole one-man show, but he doesn’t in a way that is entertaining and genuine. His visuals were enticing and colorful behind him on the stage. There were also moments that he would pick up a guitar or violin and play along with his electronic sounds. I love that! One other thing to mention is that this crowd was pretty diverse and some of the older folk at the venue were in awe at how one man could be making so many sounds by himself. It was awesome to see a different generation react to this new phenomenon of solo artists and DJs that sample and loop on stage.

Jakubi came out after Manatee Commune and played an incredible, high-energy show. As a whole, you could tell they have such trust with one another on stage and that they’ve practiced everything so much. Keeping it tight throughout every song, they never missed a beat and from the start the crowd was dancing. They played a few of my personal favorites like “Couch Potato” and “Feels Like Yesterday.” For fans that weren’t as familiar with their music, they went into an amazing cover of Stevie Wonders’ “Superstition” and took the hype up to another level. One thing remained constant throughout the set and it was that each of the band members showed real emotion and collaborative energy when looking at one another. Towards the end of the set the lead singer said “Coming from the other side of the world…well, we’re just so honored, this shit is so real, and we can’t thank you enough.” The feeling is mutual Jakubi! We hope to see you back in LA very soon. Check out more pics from the show below and check out the set list at the bottom with links to their best tracks.
