From a stripped down piano driven track to an upbeat dance mega-hit, it is pretty clear why London based songstress Jasmine Thompson has over 1.3 million Youtube subscribers and has received over 250 million views. Her crystalline vocals and cross-over appeal are massive. Now signed to Atlantic Records, Thompson spent several weeks in New York and Los Angeles working on songs that will be featured on her upcoming ‘Adore’ EP.

GroundSounds recently caught up with Jasmine to find out about her latest EP and more, check out the exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Jasmine Thompson, can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you got started with music?

I always loved singing and watching YouTube videos, but I didn’t know that I wanted to be a musician until much later.   I used to annoy my brother by singing over him in his singing lessons, so my mum got me my own lessons so he could sing in peace.  I started posting videos on YouTube a couple of years later.

What do you enjoy most about London? What is one local spot that every visitor should check out?

I love coming home to London, we definitely have the best parks here.  Everyone should go to Hyde Park when they come here.

You have worked with some amazing multi-platinum DJs and EDM producers, what do you think is it about your sound and aura that attracted such great company in this specific musical genre?

I am so happy that Robin and Felix liked my sound and that I got to work on some amazing dance songs with them.  I’m not sure what they liked about my aura though – you’ll have to ask them!

It was such an amazing feeling to sign with them.  I feel so proud to follow in the footsteps of amazing artists like Aretha Franklin and Ed Sheeran.  I’ve got such an amazing team around me and it has been so nice getting to know everyone.  Signing day was incredible – I was so excited to share the news with my family and fans.

What was it like collaborating with Robin Schulz on the single, “Sun Goes Down?”

Working with Robin was amazing.  He is such a lovely and hardworking guy.  Robin and I are on the same label, so they introduced us.  Robin was working on this new song and he sent it over for me to try.  I gave it a go and he loved it, so we released it.

Your YouTube channel has become an international favorite especially in regards to your cover songs, how do you choose what songs to give a “Jasmine” touch to?

I cover songs that I love and that I connect to.  I never try to be better than the original.  I just try to create my own version so that it means something to me.

What can you reveal to us about your debut Adore EP? How is it all coming together?

The EP is like a bridge between my stripped back, acoustic YouTube covers and the more upbeat dance songs I have done with Robin Schulz and Felix Jaehn.  We’re just putting final touches on it now and I can’t wait to share it with everyone.

Can you tell us about the writing and creative process involved with your track “Adore?”

I am inspired by normal, everyday life, my friends and family, and listening to music.  I worked on Adore with London based producer Steve Mac who has worked with some amazing people.  He came up with the idea to use the French phrase for “Love Always.”

After the EP release, what’s next for Jasmine Thompson, what can fans look forward to?

I am going to keep on posting YouTube videos, writing more original songs, and work towards releasing a full album hopefully sometime in the next year.  I am also rehearsing with a full band now, so I’m really excited to do more live performances around different countries.
