Featuring fined tuned guitar-pop steeped in blues and high energy rock, New York based singer-songwriter Katie Buchanan has perked up our ears with sonic goodness. Fresh off the release of her debut LP Glow, Katie is now premiering the lyric video for her track “Why You Leave A Heart,” exclusively on GroundSounds.

Katie had this to say about her latest single:

“Why You Leave a Heart,’ is a a song born from the classic songwriter “keep everything, always” habit.  I was working on a collection of versions about the (also classic) love/hate artist/NYC relationship.  And, in trying to expand that into a less geographic narrative, I stumbled upon the first line of the chorus, scribbled in a notebook corner and forgotten.

“Let’s pretend, let’s pretend, if only for a minute / that a heart is meant to bend ’til it find someone to fit it.”  It’s the kind of dense, assonance heavy line that I find myself writing, often thoughtlessly, almost as a rhyming exercise.  But it’s also the type of lyric that I’m most excited by: the creative problem solving, gymnastic puzzle of twisting a line until it sits just so. It seems only fitting to give the song a lyric video.

Also of Note: I was so worried about how lyrically dense the chorus is, but I couldn’t bear to cut anything from it.  So I just repeated it. A lot.  Then threw in some “oh oh ohs” to make up for the avalanche.

“Why You Leave A Heart” is from Katie’s debut full-length album Glow, available now.
