LA-via-NY based indie-pop songstress and Youtube sensation, Julia Nunes is gearing up for her forthcoming album Some Feelings, which drops September 25th.

The album is a big leap from the head-bobbing, sing-into-the-mirror music that her fans are used to, it features full blown dance songs with intricate rhythms and voicings, it also features grippingly honest and playful lyrics.

Julia recently sat down with GroundSounds to talk about her latest project, musical inspirations and more, check out the exclusive interview below.

Early on you found success and a dedicated following on Youtube, can you tell us about starting out and the connection that you were able to create with your fans?

YouTube is a place that really values authenticity and connection. When I first started I was just a tiny idiot in a dorm room, harmonizing with myself and that spoke to a lot of people that were looking for something a little more human than what is shoved down our throats by pop culture.  Music has become so much more accessible. You can find exactly what you want to be listening to on the Internet. I found a really loyal group of fans who not only care about my music but me as a person. That connection means so much to me and it’s a huge part of why I love playing music. I get to feel that connection and energy at my shows. I think it’s more intense than a lot of musicians experience, especially at living room shows. I do a Q and A in the middle and sometimes we all end up crying because we all know what it feels like to lose someone. I think that level of comfort is made possible because of YouTube and Instagram and Facebook etc. They keep up with my life the same way they do with their friends so we end up talking like friends.

Where do you currently call home and what was it like growing up in Rochester, NY?

I live in Los Angeles, my adopted home. I love it here. I got a California state drivers license which is a big commitment, and I feel great about it.

I have so much Rochester pride, there’s so much art and music and community in Rochester. I grew up going to the public market, hanging out at The Record Archive, and developing an undying love for Wegmans. The winters are harsh, and the summers are scorching. But there’s nothing like burrowing into a snowbank and making a tiny ice home, or having the whole neighborhood in your front yard running through the sprinkler hoping to stave off a heat stroke. Every time I’m home I try to take a bike ride down the canal, have a jam session with my dad, and grab a breakfast sandwich from Zimmerman’s at the public market.

We are all anticipating your forthcoming album Some Feelings, can you tell us about working on this record and bringing it to fruition?

This is the most fun I’ve ever had working on a record. I made it in Mount Washington at Nice Manners with Joanna Katcher who is both a comedic genius and a kick ass producer. I came to her wanting interesting rhythms and voicings and she elevated the production far beyond what I could have imagined. She helped me walk that line of sad songs that you can dance to.

unnamedWhat made you decide on the album title Some Feelings?

At first, I thought this record was going to be a break up album through and through, so I was originally thinking of some more dramatic titles but I ended up writing a few love songs before we were finished tracking the record so I needed to choose a title that was more inclusive of the range of emotion. From a broken heart to the excitement of a new crush, it’s just some of my feelings.

When covering songs how do you choose which songs to work with?

Usually if I can’t get a song out of my head, I end up trying to learn it and play it. From there, it becomes about whether not I can add something new and interesting to it. Sometimes it has to do with a harmony I wish existed in the real song. Some of my favorite covers are mash ups. Justin Beiber and Backstreetboys both wrote songs called “As Long As You Love Me.” How could I not?

We are definitely diggin’ the fresh new track “Something Bad,” can you tell us about the writing and creative process involved with this single?

I wrote this song about how we sometimes willingly implode after a break up. There’s so many clichés that go along with having a broken heart and it’s too easy to fall into them. It feels kind of good to let go, indulge in the torture.

What musicians/bands are you currently listening to?

Uh oh I discovered Nick Jonas’ latest album this weekend and I’m so in.

Wilderness is like a perfect I wanna fuck you song.

Can you tell us about the inspiration for your track “Better Than This?

Better Than This is a snap shot of the moment I realized things were not right. It is just very hard to be in love with someone who is persistently unhappy and doing nothing to change it. I call myself out for doing the same. We were both blind to it for a very long time, even after the break up.

You recently performed at Vidcon, can you tell us a little bit about the performance and experience of Vidcon in general?

OMG IT WAS SO MUCH FUN. We basically played the whole album, I wore light up shoes, I made it rain with some “FEELINGS” stickers. Everyone on stage was the person who wrote and played those parts on the album so it meant a lot to me. A perfect intro to the album.

What’s next for Julia Nunes, what can fans look forward to?

I’m making music videos and gearing up for living room tours and full band/club tours. It’s gonna be a very full year or two.
