Fusing elements of jazz, funk, alt-rock and pop, Denver based synth-rockers Rumours Follow, bring pure sonic goodness to the mile-high city. The guys recently dropped their ‘Cities of Love’ EP and it’s full of “Flavor,” just like their lead single would imply. GroundSounds recently caught up with the guys for an exclusive interview, check it out below.

For those just discovering Rumours Follow, how to the band come together and start making music?

Rumours Follow started in 2013 with a very alternative rock sound, and a six member lineup.  Whittling the lineup down to four members in 2014, we started to evolve our sound to synth-pop.  We feel were finding our niche in writing music that we all love, and plan to keep writing, recording, and releasing music.

What made you guys decide on the band name Rumours Follow?

Rumours Follow was borrowed from a Gin Blossoms song, “Found Out About You.” Nick our lead-singer LOVES the 90’s. He took it from the line “rumors follow everywhere you go.” We changed the spelling to ‘Rumours’  to be more distinct.

What do you guys enjoy most about Denver? What is one thing every visitor should see or do?

Denver’s music culture is thriving more than ever.  From all the diverse bands that are here locally to the constant stream of artists who tour through, it’s an inspiring place to live right now.  Definitely the thing to do when coming to Denver is check out a Red Rocks show.  It doesn’t matter the show, you will have a magical experience.

This EP came alive in about 3 months, and was our first release where we didn’t have strict time limits in the studio.  We were able to build the songs in the studio, and experiment with different techniques and sounds.  Having two keyboardists, we wanted to showcase heavy synth layering and lead lines.

Can you tell us about the writing and creative process involved with the lead single “Flavor?”

“Flavor” was originally not going to be included in the EP.  About 9 months earlier we recorded an original version, and were never quite satisfied with it.  We ended up dropping a song that wasn’t flowing with the style of the album, and decided to rerecord “Flavor.”  We were pretty nervous about redoing it when we had already gotten great feedback about the original version.

What is it about the elements of jazz, funk, alt-rock and pop, that attract you guys to this sound?

I think those styles are things we’ve grown up on and love.  We want to write music that hits multiple genres, and has a happy uplifting vibe.  With all of us having different influences, it was a fun challenge to blend these styles.

What was the inspiration for “Beg Like A Dog?”

“Beg Like A Dog” is a playful metaphor about mens submission to women.  We wanted it to be sexy, and layer arpeggiators, vocoder harmonies, and falsetto lead vocals.

What bands/musicians are you guys currently listening to?

Penguin Prison, Howard Jones, Brandon Flowers, Ghost Beach, Tears for Fears, Until The Ribbon Breaks, Leon Bridges, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness are just a few right now.

What’s next for Rumours Follow? What can fans look forward to?

We are currently in the studio finishing up a new single were releasing at the end of this year.  We are also organizing a few short tours in the next 6 months.  Give us a follow on any social media platform to hear about upcoming shows and releases!
