Red Bull Sound Select: 30 Days in LA Day 1 – Wax on Wax

unnamed-6

Last year we thought it was crazy. Ambitious. Maybe even impossible. But Red Bull pulled it off. They took over the LA music scene hosting a different concert, event, pop up or show every day in November 2014, across dozens of venues throughout Los Angeles. GroundSounds was there last year, and we are here again.

Last night was the kick-off, Day 1 of 30 for Red Bull’s Sound Select 30 Days in LA. Held at the famous Madame Tussauds Wax in Hollywood, the night was filled with super dope DJs spinning vinyl records amongst the wax figures of Hollywood stars.

On the top floor of the museum was the wax pop-up shop, with vendors like Amoeba Music and Origami Vinyl selling some cool LPs and 45s. There was even a stall selling some old Record Store Day exclusives.

Throughout the different floors of the building there were DJ stations created cool vibes amongst the wax figures. Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest spun an eclectic, low down funky blend of records at the station curated by Afro Punk. Playing only records released between 1965 and 1975, he laced the room with everything from Isley Brothers and Bobby Womack to Herbie Hancock and Malo. The blend of jazz, funk, soul, latin, and blues kept heads bopping and feet shuffling.

Another highlight of the night was Tuxedo’s all vinyl set. The debonair duo of Mayer Hawthorne and Jake One spun classic funk and disco hits as well as some deeper, synth-laden cuts that were lesser known but still fun to dance to. They of course played a few tracks from their eponymous album, Tuxedo.

The unique setting and use of space, the wide selection of vinyl for sale, the amazing DJ sets, and the free chocolate chip cookie after the show made this a great way to start the month of November. We at GroundSounds are excited to see what else Red Bull Sound Select has in store for the remaining shows this month.
