Soren Bryce.

With soaring vocals and soulful hooks, LA based songstress Soren Bryce is making waves with pure sonic goodness. The 18-year-old native Texan, is a classically trained violinist and self taught guitarist. Her latest tracks “Ride With Me” and “Sirens” exude real emotion and good vibes, she is definitely making moves. GroundSounds recently caught up with Soren to talk about her latest tunes, musical inspirations and more, check out the exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Soren Bryce, can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you got started with music?

Music started for me really in fifth grade when I joined my school orchestra playing the violin. I continued playing it through around eighth grade when I picked up guitar and that’s when I started writing. I’d never really viewed myself as a writer or singer, mostly just as a musician, but after some encouragement I discovered I really loved writing a lot. So here I am!

How has your transition for Texas to LA been, what do you enjoy most about Cali?

It’s been good! Nothing monumental happened upon moving here, I was surprised about the seasons however. My first snow-less winter was a bummer but still had its perks (like not freezing to death anytime I stepped outside)! I would say the most I enjoy about California is the variety of nature.

tumblr_static_dibg1t4z5e884ss8ckkwkcwg0You were recently on a West Coast tour with Mr. Little Jeans, can you tell us a little bit about this experience, what did you enjoy most about being on the road?

Tour was so much fun, and I still miss it. I’m glad to be home right now but it’s hard to go from that lifestyle to learning how to relax. I love playing shows. Love it more than anything, so the fact that I got a chance to do it every night for a bit was pretty darn magical for me. I also loved Monica (Mr. Little Jeans). She was so sweet and supportive and I miss hanging out in the green rooms with her and her band. And my band. Oh now you’ve got me all nostalgic about it!

Can you tell about the writing and creative process involved with your track “Ride With You?”

It’s funny, I was supposed to have a writing session with one of my previous drummers, Harry Allen. He had already sent me the track but I hadn’t listened and I felt so bad so on the way to his apartment I wrote the entire song in my car! When it made it onto my EP I legitimately giggled.

Can you tell us about filming the music for “Ride With You?”

It was insanely fun! Emphasis on the insane however. We filmed overnight at an abandoned mansion in the middle of nowhere in upstate NY. It was a mix of inspiring, creepy, awesome, and asbestos haha. There were a lot of emotions. I wouldn’t have had it any other way with any other people though. I loved working with the director Dev Milburn. It was truly a one of a kind experience. Also shout out to Teddy for being the best top of car stuntman I’ve ever seen!

What was the inspiration for your track “Sirens?”

I wrote sirens based around the notion that often songwriters play victim in their songs, but fail to acknowledge that we too do some wrong or some harm or hurt others. Sirens is about being the bad, being the hurtful one. I’m happy to have risen above this notion, personally, and I’m hoping others use the song to motivate them to be the best they can be to others.

What bands/musicians are you currently listening to?

I love Twenty one pilots to the moon and back, they have inspired me so much. Lately I’ve liked how a lot of the people I’m meeting are becoming a part of my daily playlist. I think it’s so cool to know all these creative people. I listen to Mr little jeans, night beds whom I met in Portland on tour, and I really love SOHN as well. This paragraph could go on forever so I’ll just end it here!

Can you tell us about “pissed-off folk” and what attracts you to this sound?

Honestly I just like emotion. I crave emotion. For me there was something so freeing about listening to people like Ani DI Franco or Alanis Morisette, who don’t care what people say they just sort of..do and exist. I’ve kind of made it my mission to just be really honest and put it all out on the table because what’s the point if not.

What’s next for Soren Bryce, what can fans look forward to?

I’m writing a lot to start working on an album in the next couple months, and I just want people to look forward to hopefully learning more about me and more about themselves through the process. I also hope to be joining some more tours soon, and playing some festivals in 2016. This year is gonna kick ass. Can I say ass? Well it’s written so feel free to bleep me. 🙂
