LA based lo fi acoustic punk and folk musician Deepakalypse is gearing up for the release of his forthcoming full length album ‘Floating on a Sphere,’ it is set to drop July 8th. Featured on the project is the fresh new track “Drummers,” the accompanying lyric video is now premiering on GroundSounds, check it out below along with an exclusive interview!

For those just discovering Deepakalypse, can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you got started in music?

My mom had an acoustic guitar around the house when I was growing up so thats how I got started. I saw the movie La Bamba and really wanted a white and black stratocastor like the one in the movie and my mom bought it for me. I was probably twelve. Then I met a couple guys in middle school and started a band… I got kicked out cause I sucked but I kept playing and started another band with my good friend Dale when I was like 16. I was trying to rip off the subhumans and did a pretty good job.

Can you tell us about working and bring your forthcoming album ‘Floating on a Sphere’ to fruition?

Its a culmination of my first two albums , Kamikaze Collective and Magnetic Love, and a couple other tracks that were recorded by the talented Jon Debaun.  The songs on it span about fifteen years of my life.

What made you decide on the album name ‘Floating on a Sphere?’

Its the name of a track on the album and I thought it was blatant in its simplicity and thats kind of how I see my music.

Can you tell us about the writing and creative process involved with “Drummers?”

Well , all my songs take years to write or better yet I take years to write them. I got  a guitar riff and then I got some writings and things start to come together… it spills onto the page then with the guitar the words get wedged in my head. I edit a lot over time and add. Then one day it just seems done:)

What musicians/bands are you currently listening to?

Fuzz, Flume , Little Dragon , Chet Faker, Whiskey Buiscuit, Massenger, Prince

Can you tell us about your lo fi acoustic punk sound? What attracts you to this?

Well I just do what I can with what I have so thats really the primary cause. Even though I recorded my last album with ableton on a computer it sounds funky cuase I never got it mastered…. I just needed to get the album out so thats how it sounds. I tried my best in my room  with what I had. As far as acoustic punk as a style, I just really wanted my lyrics to be heard  and I don’t have a loud voice. I wanted all kinds of people to listen to my stuff so I try to make the music interesting in  a way that embraces you.

After the release of ‘Floating on Sphere’, what can fans look forward to?

I have an arsenal of songs I’d love to release more of, but most importantly shows all over the place.
