Hailing from Helsinki, folk-pop songstress Peppina is making her mark in NYC with infectious hooks, intimate vocals, and inspirational lyrics. This young indie alt-pop artist is gearing up for the release her debut full-length album ‘Fire’ and it’s set to drop April 28th.
GroundSounds recently caught up with Peppina to talk about her forthcoming project, musical inspirations and more, check out the interview and discover this new emerging talent below.
For those just discovering Peppina, can you tell us a little bit about your background and how you got started with music?
As long as I can remember, it’s always been all about music. I started playing the classical flute when I was seven, piano when I was ten and taught myself how to play guitar at 15. At first I wanted to be a music teacher or therapist, then as I started writing and getting good feedback on my work, I was able to gather enough courage to dream of being a full time songwriter. My big turning point was when I got invited to perform at a hitRECord event at the Orpheum Theatre, after that there was no turning back – I wanted to try being a performing artist.
What was it like growing up in Helsinki? What has the transition to NYC been like?
Helsinki is a very safe, clean and well functioning place. We lived on this island that’s just six minute bus ride from the city center, but still filled with beautiful parks and beaches. It was all very nice, but in a way it was too nice – what was always missing for me was the thrive, energy and movement, and that’s what I felt the second I entered NYC. It’s like you can literally feel the electricity that comes from the millions of people who are here to make their dreams come true. Although it’s a big move, the transition has been pretty easy so far – I have a great group of friends in the city that make me feel welcomed and at home.
Can you tell us about working on bringing your forthcoming debut album ‘Fire’ and bringing it to fruition?
I have never been this excited and proud about any project before. Working on a full length album gave me a platform to really think what I want to bring to this world, what would I want people to feel. Musically and lyrically it’s been an amazing journey, bringing these stories and messages to life, I’ve learned so much and I can’t wait to spread my message!
What made you decide on the album title ‘Fire’?
Not only is the title track one of my favorites on the album, but “Fire” truly describes this release perfectly. This album is powerful, strong, warm and electric – just like fire.
Can you tell us about the writing and creative process behind your track “What You Are Will Show?”
I was thinking of my high school friends when I was writing that track. As we all graduated, so many of them seemed to be freaking out over how they didn’t know what they’re going to do with the rest of their lives, or whether they’re on the “right path” right away. Too many people think that there’s a one “right” path, and too many people think they’ll run out of time if they don’t start on it right away. I wanted to counteract that attitude.
What do you enjoy most about being on stage? What goes through your mind while performing?
It really depends of the song. If I’m performing a really quiet song, and the whole room is quiet, what I enjoy the most is the moment when I can feel how each person connects to my words and each other – it’s like I’m inviting them to this whole separate world, just for the duration of that song. When we’re performing a more up-beat song, the best feeling is when I get completely lost in the music and just enjoy it and live in the moment. Everyone always says you should “live in the moment”, but it’s not that easy, and to actually experience it is amazing to me!
What is it about folk-pop that attracts you to this sound?
Since I started it all by myself, playing piano and guitar in my bedroom, my roots are in organic music and sounds. But I love mixing it up with electronic sounds and vibes, I love spicing things up.
What bands/musicians are you currently listening to?
Right now I’m slowly becoming more and more obsessed with Alessia Cara. I just discovered her like a week ago and I love everything she does and especially the way she represents herself. So down to earth and strong!
After the album release, what’s next for Peppina? What can fans look forward to?
Hopefully I’ll be able to do more and more and more live shows!
