Copenhagen four-piece Communions just dropped their long-awaited debut album ‘Blue.’ With melodic guitar riffs and ever-wistful vocals the project is eleven tracks of pure sonic goodness. The band brought everything they were brooding over on their previous releases into focus with this debut album – it’s louder and clearer, the immediacy of the experience is epic.

GroundSounds recently caught up with the guys to talk about their latest project, musical inspirations and more, check out the exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Communionscan you tell us little bit about your background, how did you guys meet and start making music?

We came to know each other in high school, and had many mutual friends. We all had a love for music and many of our other friends were making music at the time too, so it just made sense to create a band together. Frederik and Jacob had a band so we all moved into there rehearsal space, Mayhem.

Martin and Mads: What was the transition from Seattle to Copenhagen like?

It was extremely difficult in the beginning. Moving away from all you’re friends and starting over in a country where you can’t read or right a word of the language, and have nothing in common with anyone is very depressing. Especially at that age.  But like everything else, you get used to it over time. I think it took about five years before i felt at home in copenhagen. We made new friends and have created something we might not have been able to in Seattle. In retrospect the pain we felt during the transition was definitely worth it.

What has it been like working on your debut album Blue’ and bringing it to fruition?

It has been fun and frustrating at times. the songs were writing over almost three years, so we were very eager to finally bring them to life. All the songs were written at home and in our rehearsal space, where we are creatively limited. We can only work with two guitars, a bas and a drum set. Its always fun to bring the songs into the studio. You have many more options and opportunities to change and add different sounds to the music when you go into the studio. We saw our songs from a different angle, and were able to take a step back and look at the music differently. It really expanded our creative output. However that can also be the frustrating part. Recording music is still very foreign to us. A lot of the time it is hard to know what you want.

What made you guys decide on the album title Blue?

We had a hard time finding an album title that represented all the songs on the album. As mentioned above, the songs are very different from each other since they were written over such a long time. We thought that the album title should be a bit abstract.

Can you tell us about the writing and creative process involved with the single “Come  On, I’m Waiting”?

I actually can’t recall how that song was written.. It’s a pretty straight forward song with focus on the melodies. The lyrics express more of a feeling than a narrative. Feeling restless, and in search of lost time.

What was the inspiration behind the track “It’s like Air”?

I think we wanted to make a song that had a classic rock feeling (like rolling stones or primal scream), but make it more melodic and modern.

What musicians/bands are you currently listening to?

Massive attack, Air, Nas.

After the album drops, what’s next, what can fans look forward to?

We have already begun to write new songs. Hopefully we can record the second album at the end of the year.
