With an undercurrent of infectious melodies and intertwining dual vocals, Indiana based punk-punk rockers Rebuild & Rebound are making moves as they gear up for the release of their forthcoming EP ‘Wishful Thinking.’ It’s set for release in early 2017 and we expect nothing but pure sonic goodness.

GroundSounds recently caught up with the guys to talk about their latest project, musical inspirations and more, check out the exclusive interview below.

For those just discovering Rebuild & Rebound, how do you guy meet and start making music?

Three fourths of the band (Jake, Mike, & Quade) all went to high school together.  We all had played music together and had already released some music very early on. The band played together for about two years until we were introduced to Christian at a show we played together. We asked him to join, and just like that the lineup was set in stone. It was also at that point when the band started to get a bit more serious as we started to gain momentum and continue on the path that has put us here today.

What made you all decide on the name Rebuild & Rebound?

The guitar player that we had before Christian was in the band, proposed the name.  Naturally being a group that likes to spread a positive message, it seemed like a natural fit.  Though we didn’t realize that the name was actually taken from The Story So Far’s song “Quicksand”.  None the less it stuck and we’ve made it our own!

What do you guys enjoy most about Indiana?

That has to be a trick question… Though if we have to be honest, the best thing about where we are from in particular is being so close to Chicago.  Being as close as we are has been a blessing when it comes to playing shows and trying to get in front of a larger audience, though we don’t have to worry about living in the city and paying for a practice space and the whole nine yards.

Can you tell us about the writing and creative process involved with your single “Knockout?”

For our new material, and especially for our song Knockout, we had taken a microscope to what we wanted to be as a musical brand. Did we want to keep on the pop punk train? Did we want to go back to easycore? At the end of it all, we wanted to mature and appeal not to just the niche of pop punk, but to a wider spectrum.  Plus our writing styles and influences were all leading down to us becoming a pop rock band with an alternative sound.  So we kind of scratched all of our old building blocks and started with a fresh slate, and we had pure fun with it! Knockout was kind of the quintessence of our change; us putting down one torch for another.  At first it was a bit scary, we didn’t know how it would be received at all.  Though now looking at it and all of the positive feedback, we feel like it’s what we were meant to do!

What is it like filming the festive video for “Knockout?”

Imagine getting all of your friends, who can all be pretty ravenous party animals, and giving them near a pallet full of beer and telling them to go nuts at 10am on a Saturday.  It was crazy, but it was awesome.  We didn’t have a real script, we didn’t really have a real plan, and the only thing we knew is that we wanted the story from the first music video, “Consider This”, to tie in just a bit.  Other than that, all was fair game.  So to put it simply, it was chaos, but positive chaos none the less.

You guys are currently working on new EP, what can you reveal to us about this project?

So the two songs we have released so far as well as a soon to be released third we plan to put into a digital EP that we are currently planning to call The Afterparty EP.  The songs when played in order do tell a bit of a loose story of love gained and lost, and what priorities and steps we have to take in life to be happy.  With this EP we plan to set an official new face for R&R, and give it out to the world to show how far we’ve come. With that EP we do plan to tour on it pretty heavily, as well as our sophomore EP Wishful Thinking.  We hope to attract positive attention our way and to keep on the path that we’ve laid out for us with it.

What is it about pop-punk that attracts you guys to this sound?

Pop punk / Pop rock, is a tricky genre to grasp because there’s so much music that fits into that one genre.  It’s great because while there is a “generic pop punk or pop rock” style, the genre is always reinventing itself, while keeping its roots alive.  Look at bands like Blink versus bands like Set It Off; when put side by side, their music is quite different but they’re still in that same punkish gene pool.  So being able to throw yourself into such a diverse genre of music like this is enriching and constantly refreshing.

What advice would you guys give to emerging indie bands on the move?

Don’t let anything stand in your way.  When you sit down with some of your best friends and decide that this is what you’re going to do, do it and do it right.  Don’t let the little things like money, girls, egos or any of that crap drag you down.  Keep on the path that you set and follow it with everything you’ve got.

What bands/musicians are you all currently listening to?

We could send you an entire encyclopedia on what we have listened to in just the past month, though if we had to pick a choice few it would have to be Waterparks, Maroon 5, The Cab, The Maine, Switchfoot, All Time Low, Logic, Easy E, Mayday Parade, and Panic! At the Disco.

What’s next for Rebuild & Rebound, what can fans look forward to?

Expect to see us doing what we love and coming to see as much of the world as we can. This year is going to be the year of putting rubber to the road, both literally and figuratively, and we hope to bring as many people on that journey with us and see as many of our best friends across the US as we possibly can!
