It seems too many “New Music Fridays” recently have come and gone with a whimper. Perhaps a great new track or album sprinkled into lackluster Fridays. Last week, the Feb 24 unleashing (releasing was not a big enough word) of new music into the world was this year’s first monster week.

*Recap includes releases from the entire week, not just the 24th

Appetizer: the EP

John Mayer: The Search for Everything: Wave Two

Mayer delivers what many have been begging for: digestible feel-good tunes with his signature flair and songwriting chops. Wow. I’m a bit full, but there’s too much good cuisine left…

The Meaty Entrees: the albums

Acceptance: Colliding By Design

Hippo Campus: Landmark

Future: HNDRXX

Los Campesinos!: Sick Scenes

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah: The Tourist

Getting 5 albums you can’t wait to dig into is awesome for an entire month, let alone one day.

Acceptance announced their comeback with a mature evolution of their sound that somehow exceeded lofty expectations. Hippo Campus trumpeted their arrival with a composed album of impressive tunes. Future does what Future does: super predictable beats with familiar rapping…but somehow it’s better and more enjoyable than the majority of contemporaries. Los Campesinos! continue their auditory onslaught and retain their edge with a gritty, glorious album and CYHSY deliver 37 minutes of indie-goodness.

Dessert: the singles

Calvin Harris, Frank Ocean, Migos: “Slide”

Zedd, Alessia Cara: “Stay”

The Chainsmokers, Coldplay: “Something Just Like This”

Gucci Mane, Nicki Minaj: “Make Love”

Trey Songz: “Playboy”

The 1975: ‘By Your Side”

Spoon: “Can I Sit Next To You”

Bush: “Lost In You”

Wale, G-Eazy: “Fashion Week”

OK, OK, I’m seriously full. I’ll be spending extra time on the treadmill this week from all this decadence. Here’s hoping 2017 continues to feed us indulgent weeks like this.
