Diamonds and Whiskey Gleam with New Album ‘Dark Country Voodoo’

By SHARON JENNINGS

Diamonds and Whiskey takes a new approach to the Americana-Country genre. The new album, Dark Country Voodoo is a blend of alternative with traditional, drenched in dark references to busted love, broken hearts and revenge.

The Charlotte, N.C.-based band presents a new style to a genre that remains popular throughout the world but that may need a boost among the younger Americans. The musicians on the record, Jenny Webb on voice, piano and guitar; Von Bury on guitar, bass and drums; Chris McKinney on drums; and Elena Martin on violin, give it all they’ve got.

Keeping it simple is the best methodology with this band. Outstanding songs on this record are the vocal-leading “Wasted on Your Love,” the haunting “25 to Life,” and the starkly beautiful “Hero.” The melodies and guitar work anchor this collection of emotional songs.

The tracks on the album are all in keeping with the sound of the swamp as there’s a clear influence of Louisiana here on the record. But there’s a little Pacific Northwest in play here as Seattle music engineer and producer Graig Markel, known for his work with the Animals at Night and Dead Ship Sailing, takes the reins.

Diamonds and Whiskey is appropriately named as this band adds a gleaming sparkle to the typical country shot of hooch.
