Beard Bates is an intriguing name to watch in the music world. Today we’re thrilled to premiere his new song “Weasel Sleeping” – streaming below! This alternative rock, psychedelic western track was recorded in collaboration with The Real Spooky Wilson, an outfit that features Bates, drummer Kevin Figueiredo (Extreme, Perry Farrell, Chester Bennington, Tantric, Slash) and bassist Chris Mckee. The song jumps out at you immediately and is driven by his unique vocals. This one you’ll want to play, then play again, then play even louder to really get the full effect with the lyrics.

In his own words:

The phrase “You Can’t Catch a Weasel Sleeping,” is an old euphemism for a person that is watchful, alert, and thus not easily surprised or hoodwinked. I used the phrase with the addition of “don’t you feed them firewater, when you know they’re Indians,” to reinforce the idea there are common life truths that should be respected and not forgotten or ignored, especially in the face of personal gain; in essence, to be a good person one needs to respect basic shared truths. The song tells different stories: that of a perfect man who becomes depressed and fails to motivate himself to crawl out of his depression; that of a beautiful girl who had natural beauty but gives into prostitution and thus squanders her gift; and that of a perfect family that is broken apart by both 1.) the husband’s lust for Gold, women, and Western expansion, and 2.) the wife’s inability to deal with the loss of her estranged husband–which leads her to take her own life and that of her child. The dark stories all portray the propensity for humans to hold so firm to individual idealisms and personal ego-centric perspectives that they end up ruining their lives.

The moral of the story is that “things are the way they are, and until we all decide to change, we must play by the rules of the world.” So essentially one should respect the way of the world and live in accordance with it, even if it means eschewing individualism in order to live the most harmonious and fulfilling life possible. There also lies in this last line the quasi-Nietzschean ideal that man can overcome himself and his current position if and when “we all decide to change”; what is intimated here is the promise that as a collective, humans have the potential to transcend their current state and elevate their consciousness, but until that point we all must play “by the rules of the world.”
