PREMIERE: The New Restaurants – “Dug Up Proust”

Since the beginning of quarantine, and really well before that, it’s clear that when the shit really goes down, the extraordinarily wealthy among us have every intention of leaving our sorry asses behind. The privatization of space travel, the rise and immediate fall of Theranos and even something as relatively innocuous as David Geffen’s yacht have all hit the zeitgeist in recent years, all met with sardonic social media posts with a twinge of knowing anxiety.

NYC-based group The New Restaurants have been observing these and other waves of moral ambiguity in our society, funneling their findings into their new album Wrong Place at Wrong Time, with a new single “Dug Up Proust” arriving today. The bassline buoys the track like a life preserver for us all as The New Restaurants offer sharp critiques at breakneck speed. “Dug Up Proust” is a brilliant blend of garage-rock and satire and we’re happy to be premiering it for you here today.

The band shares:

“There’s a pocket of white dudes that have gotten rich enough that they’ve started saying things like, ‘we can cure death,’ and it is so stupid and bad. This song is about that. A lot of these same people are also guilty of believing that technology in itself is a net positive, and that by applying technology to anything it automatically gets better, so this song is about that too. Let’s shoot all the rich people into space and leave them there!

Bonus fact: based on one Monty Python sketch I saw, British people pronounce “Proust” like prowst instead of proost. Weird.”

Listen to The New Restaurants’ “Dug Up Proust” and look for Wrong Place at Wrong Time out September 4th on Totally Real Records. You can find “Dug Up Proust” out everywhere here.
