New York based band The Dust Bowl Faeries have released recently, ‘Candy Store’ and have a music video for it as well. ‘Candy Store’ is the last song off their The Plague Garden album, released earlier last month. Dust Bowl Faeries is a Dark Carnival band founded by Ryder Cooley and Hazel, a taxidermy ram who performs with the band as their mascot spirit animal. Ryder sat down with Jessey Alley to discuss how the song came about, and much more.
Ryder Cooley founded the Dust Bowl Faeries as an all women trio in 2015 with Liz LoGiudice, bass and vocals, Rubi LaRue, lapsteel and vocals. Though over the last couple of years they’ve brought some guys into the mix (Jon B. Woodin, guitar, castanettes, and vocals, Andrew Stein, percussion) the band is committed to working with as many women / female identifying musicians (& filmmakers!) as possible. Lead vocalist Ryder Cooley is queer and gender-fluid (pronouns: she/her) and she’s vastly fascinating and is a very creative songwriter which you can sense with the themes surrounding The Plague Garden tracks. Ryder’s background in riot girrl has made her infinitely passionate about the representation, presence & visibility of women in music. They’re also an inter – generational band; their lap-steel player is a punk rock grandma who learned how to play guitar in the band.
Ryder talks about how she likes some of the dark tales, “I always liked the sinister stuff, like the story of Aunt Dorothy who accidently lit herself on fire and burned to death,” confesses Cooley about the dark family tales that inspire her music. “Maybe that’s why my grandma played ‘Candy Store,’ because it reminded her of Dorothy. Or maybe it was because her husband was a candy salesman and she was diabetic so she couldn’t eat any of his candy. Or maybe it was because grandpa’s ancestors were slavic gypsies who immigrated from Eastern Germany and Poland. There are so many layers of family history embedded in this song, and I am happy to keep the song alive in the oral history tradition.”
