Graffiti artist Banksy whose work normally sells for hundred of thousands of dollars, sold signed artwork at starving artist prices in Central Park over the weekend. That’s right he set up a pop-up shop and had an older gentleman man the booth.
“Yesterday I set up a stall in the park selling 100% authentic original signed Banksy canvases. For $60 each,” he wrote on his website Sunday.
At the end of the day he had only sold $420 dollars worth of work. He barely sold anything! We suspect that the outcome would have been different if people knew that this was Banksy’s original work.
Perhaps this is just his response to the commercialization of art. The people who just got an amazing deal did so because they enjoyed the pieces, not because of the name behind it!
