Kobi Onyame Returns with fresh visuals for “My Prayer”

After three years producer and songwriter Kobi Onyame has served up a new offering of music titled ‘Don’t Drink The Poison.’

The album reflects not only on the last 18 months of Kobi’s life but the current state of the world. “I recorded the majority of this album in lock down in 2020. It was the toughest and most confusing year yet the most beautiful 18 months of my life” Kobi says.

The album takes hiphop and Pan-African music and infuses the two giving each song on the project a vibrant upbeat vibe with personal yet relatable lyrics. The visuals for the second track on the album titled “My Prayer” start off with Kobi in a dimly lit Captown convenience store all alone in silence besides with ambient noise of scratchy coughing and rushing traffic in the background. Seeming to be a representation of Kobi’s tough times during lockdown.

He then steps out of the store on to the beautiful streets of Captown and music fills the air. Its shows shots of grand Cathedrals signifying Kobi’s faith and beautiful street art grazes across the screen while Kobi is dancing in the streets with people in mask walking by and enjoying life. These images seemingly signify the beauty of the past 18 months of Kobi’s life. The video ties in to the inspiration behind the album.

Although Kobi has not released music in three years he has not missed and has came back very strong. Described by Complex as “uplifting and colourful […] a vibrant spectacle”, Kobi’s music is a glorious crossover between hip-hop and pan-African music, as he seamlessly bridges the gap between both worlds. He was born in Accra, Ghana and grew up in living between England and Scotland, with early musical influences that varied from Notorious BIG to Daddy Lumba to Talking drums. After university, he plunged into his music and was soon performing at Glastonbury Festival with BBC Introducing, as well as opening for the likes of Kanye West, Nas and Wu Tang Clan.
