Interview: Edmonton’s Forester Reclaim the Chaos of Coming-of-Age with Relentless Punk Energy on New Single, “Daredevil Youth”

Edmonton punk rockers Forester channel late-night longing and the raw edge of memory in their latest single, “Daredevil Youth.” Fueled by adrenaline, angst, and aching nostalgia, the track is a shout-along anthem to the reckless abandon of being young, alive, and utterly unbreakable.

Honest and unpolished, “Daredevil Youth” doesn’t try to dress youth up in sentimentality – it drags it through the mud, slaps on a crooked grin, and raises a glass to everything that shaped us, scarred us, and made it all worth it.

“This one is quite literal,” says pianist Keenan Gregory. “It’s an anthem to our younger years, and being wild and free. The time we’ve spent playing music together has left its mark on each of us – it’s been formative.”

Anchored by their signature melodic piano punches and distortion-soaked guitars, “Daredevil Youth” feels like speeding down a highway at 2AM with the windows down and too much on your mind. It’s cinematic, gritty, and packed with emotional weight – romantic in the most gut-punch kind of way.

1. What did you enjoy most about the recording process of this new release?
Taking our time to get it right. We were adding elements to the song right up until the mix stage. – James Banks (Drummer/Producer)
2. Share a nugget of advice that has resonated with you most over the years.
“The cavalry is not coming. YOU are the cavalry” – Mark Duplass. It can be a hard pill to swallow, but no one is coming to save you. The label deal isn’t ‘just around the corner.’ Knowing and accepting this has empowered me to quit waiting around and instead just create the things that I want to create. Often with absolutely no budget. – Keenan Gregory (Piano)
3. Who would be your dream artist/band to co-headline a tour with?
The Dear Hunter. – James Banks (Drummer/Producer)

4. What sets your music apart from others in your genre?
We all have wildly different influences, yet when we write together it just ends up sounding like “us.” – James Banks (Drummer/Producer)
5. Tell us what your favourite song is at the moment and why.
Hard’ by Vox Rea. Their sound completely blurs the line between modernity and nostalgia and, I believe, it has raised the bar for Canadian music. Thoughtful lyrics and soothing melodies that send me into a colourful haze. Keep me in this dreamy state forever please! – Keenan Gregory (Piano)
