Interview: Ontario’s Dre Dupuis Captures DIY Indie Spirit on New Single “Drift”

St. Catharines, Ontario-based artist Dre Dupuis unveils his intimate new single “Drift,” recorded entirely in his laundry room on a Tascam 488 tape machine. Homemade, melancholic, and soothing, the track is a testament to Dupuis’ DIY spirit, blending lo-fi indie rock with introspective melodies and warm, intricate harmonies.

“‘Drift’ was tracked entirely at home,” Dupuis explains. “I sampled and chopped some drums, recorded guitars and bass directly into the board, and ran vocals through a dynamic mic. Working within the tape machine’s limitations forced me to simplify, which actually freed me up creatively. After two weeks of overcomplicating things digitally, I went back to live mixdowns on tape and finished the mix in two evenings. Hell ya.”

The single exemplifies Dupuis’ hands-on approach to music-making, from recording to mixing, capturing a sound that is both intimate and timeless. Drawing from influences like The Strokes, Andy Shauf, and The Beach Boys, Dupuis layers punchy riffs, tender vocals, and textured instrumentation to create a world of personal reflection and quiet beauty.

Every chord and note in “Drift” comes from a place of patience, experimentation, and quiet observation – music crafted in the small, meaningful moments of everyday life.

Dre Dupuis, a 29-year-old singer-songwriter from St. Catharines, Ontario, has been playing guitar and tinkering with home recording since he was 12. His upcoming self-titled debut album, out digitally October 24th, showcases his meticulous DIY approach and lo-fi indie rock sensibilities. The album is a deeply personal collection of tracks, blending soulful songwriting with textured, intimate production that invites listeners into a world built from the ground up.

1. What did you enjoy most about the creation of this new release?
I’d say the recording/mixing process. Cassette portastudios slow you down, but for someone like me who struggles with option fatigue, it really does simplify things & saves me from overdubs galore. The recorder’s unavoidable sonic imprint is one I find charming as well.

2. Share a nugget of advice that has resonated with you most over the years.
“Don’t pee into the wind.” – my dad

3. Who would be your dream artist/band to co-headline a tour with?
A weird pairing for sure, but if we’re talking dream scenario, Guided by Voices. Might have to throw “Kicker of Elves” into the setlist for that one.

4. What sets your music apart from others in your genre?
Not really sure what sets it apart, to be honest.  I made the record in my laundry room, so maybe that’s worth something.

5. Tell us what your favourite song is at the moment and why.
“Are You Looking Up” by Mk.gee. I’m late to the party, but this one introduced me. Sweet guitar chops and a slick voice to boot. Highly recommend.
