Kyle Gass has spent decades walking the line between comedy and classic rock, but anyone who’s followed his career knows the joke has always been that he’s the real deal. Best known as one half of the GRAMMY Award-winning Tenacious D alongside Jack Black, Gass has been wielding a guitar since he was eight years old, and in this latest Cardboard Sessions, the laughs take a backseat to the playing.
Performing with the Kyle Gass Band on an Echopark cardboard jazz acoustic guitar, Gass digs into “Tremendous” with the relaxed confidence of a musician who has long since earned his stripes. The performance strips away the larger-than-life stage persona, revealing a songwriter and guitarist whose roots run deep in classic rock, blues, and folk traditions.
The chemistry within the band is unmistakable. Their performances feel lived-in rather than rehearsed, allowing Gass’s trademark humor to surface naturally instead of demanding the spotlight. It’s that balance—between sharp musicianship and an unforced sense of fun—that gives these songs their character. They’re never trying to be funny, yet they’re impossible to experience without cracking a smile.
The session doesn’t stop there. The band returns with a second performance of “Manchild,” further showcasing the easy camaraderie and musical instincts that have made the Kyle Gass Band more than just a side project—it’s a fully realized rock outfit with plenty of heart.
Presented by Ernest Packaging, this edition of Cardboard Sessions captures Gass in his element: equal parts seasoned guitarist, charismatic frontman, and lifelong rock-and-roll believer. It’s a reminder that the best performances don’t have to choose between substance and a good time—they can deliver both in the same breath.
