Toronto based singer-songwriter Alex Southey’s unique blend of wandering lyricism, atmospheric strings, and emotive sense of melody makes for an engrossing, contemplative listen. His third full-length album, …And the Country Stirred, set for release on Feb 5th, was produced by JUNO-winner and Polaris Prize-nominee John Critchley (Dan Mangan, Elliott BROOD) and mastered by Aaron Hutchison (Zoon, Luka Kuplowsky).
Sprawled across the 11 tracks is everything from fiddle, to choral vocals, to distorted mandolin. Instead of going the traditional singer-songwriter route, as he had on his previous albums, Southey decided to approach the album’s arrangements with the help of Kenny Feinstein, leader of LA bluegrass band Water Tower. The music has an affectionate, romantic quality to it. In addition, it reels from chaotic noise to character study.
