Queens-bred R&B talent Mai Anna is switching up the energy with her latest single, “Chameleon,” a left-of-center, soul-infused offering that finds the singer embracing every version of herself without asking for permission. Part self-reflection, part personal liberation, the record plays like a letter to her own reflection—letting go of outside expectations, breaking free from the mold, and getting back in tune with her authentic self.
Cooked up in the desert landscape of Joshua Tree with longtime collaborator and producer Solomon Fox, “Chameleon” moves to the beat of its own drum. An elastic, jazz-laced bassline gives the track its bounce, while Mai Anna’s buttery vocals glide through silky R&B runs before snapping into quick, percussive pockets that keep the sound unpredictable. “I’ve had so many moments where I was afraid of what was next, especially when the version of my life I had imagined started to fall apart,” Mai Anna reveals. “But I’ve learned that sometimes beautiful things fall apart because you’re ready for something new. When I could let go of who I thought I was supposed to be, I found myself much closer to who I actually was.”
Mai Anna’s story is a testament to what happens when raw talent meets patience, purpose, and the courage to follow your own rhythm. Raised in Queens by a Japanese mother and Puerto Rican father, the rising R&B artist grew up in a world where academics took center stage—but music was always calling her name. Even while attending Harvard, she kept her creativity alive, spending time at the piano, writing songs, jamming, and performing without ever officially recording her music.
Years in the making. A sound all her own. Mai Anna is now finally ready to let the world hear what she’s been creating. ‘Sleepy Eyes’ is on the way but for now enjoy “Chameleon”!
