PREMIERE: Carrousel – “A Solitary Soul”

Brendon Goldwasser

GroundSounds is super excited to share the new single and lyric video from emerging Los Angeles duo Carrousel, comprised of Joel Piedt (songwriter, vocals, production) and Rosa Sharon (songwriter, vocals). They have a distinct sound that pulls from several genres at once, with solid cohesion, mostly inspired by industrial and psychedelic rock, new wave, NYC boom-bap, and shoegaze.

The new track starts off with a trippy vibe as an alarm clock fades into warm synth hums, eventually leading into an explosion of gritty guitar licks, psychedelic textures, and upbeat percussion. The sonic journey is dynamic and exciting on this one, creating a listening experience that gets you to click play again once it ends. We’ve added this stellar track to our Non-Skip List playlist on Spotify.

Here’s what Joel had to say about how the song came together:

“I wrote A Solitary Soul over the course of maybe 7 years. There’s two distinct sections, and the B section (“I just want to be by myself…”) is actually the one that came first, maybe even as far back as 2010 or 2011. There was a world I was tapping into there that I knew I needed to explore later, perhaps with an entire record, so I temporarily put it on the shelf. That world was my journey through and out of depression, a journey in which the songs that later would populate this world played a significant role in assisting me.

The A section of the song (“I had a dream…”) came to me the morning after I had a dream, the nature of which is described in the song. So it’s actually quite literal. I knew early on that this particular song would play an important role in the album, both sonically and thematically, so it seemed right to have it be the first single to set the tone for what is to come.”
