Dark-Pop Rebel Anna Sofia Releases New Single ‘Cruel World’

Up and coming pop-punk creator Anna Sofia has returned with another showcase of her talent for claustrophobic storytelling in her new single “Cruel World”. The visual focuses on the same physical and mental confines presented in the video for “No.5”, but this time with experiments from the outside world. Part of a larger, upcoming film project from Anna, the video leaves the question of what’s next for Anna, will she make it out? Fans will find out in Anna’s “LET ME OUT I’M FREE!” debut EP, officially announced on April 21, and arriving May 19 via Mismatched Socks Presents.

Co-signed by artists like Noga Erez, Anna will also support the Israeli singer-songwriter on her tour date in Toronto on June 29 at Velvet Underground.

Anna describes the process of creating the track,

“I came into the ‘Cruel World’ session with this concept that I wanted to make a song that told a story. I know every song is a story in its own way, however, I wanted this story to be more visual, and more of a fictional story. At the time of writing this song, I was in a position in my career where I felt I was being treated as a product by the people around me. A bunch of money and power-hungry business people, using me as another stepping stone to their success. This inspired me to use this concept that I was already very eager to speak about, but turn it into some crazy fictional fairytale. We ended up making each verse their own separate story that, in the end, speak on the same life lesson. We decided to use the chorus as an opportunity to sum up both stories and explain the message they were both telling which is: money and power can take you far, but it’s a cruel world when there’s no love.”

Growing up just outside of Toronto, Canada, Anna Sofia performed on every stage that would have her, from school recitals to her family restaurant, dreaming of moving abroad to perform like the artists she admired, from Sir Elton John to Tyler the Creator. Now at 18, Anna Sofia has accrued millions of streams and a legion of dedicated fans for one reason: she’s honest.

The singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist’s music represents an artist living in the moment, reflecting on life and navigating the drama of becoming an adult–with sophisticated, experimental and theatrical tunes free from pretense and bullshit, singing directly from the heart of the Gen-Z experience.

“I don’t have a message. It’s just real life. My goal is to be a source of comfort, safety and empowerment for my audience. I hope my music can be a tool people can use to help them find strength when they need it, and just feel comfortable in their own skin. I love performing so much because I kinda forget about reality for a bit and it’s just me and the fans, and we party our heads off!!! That connection is everything to me. I’m so happy that live shows are coming back… I just wanna spread love and support everywhere.”
