Swaying between the punchiness of modern rock and the nostalgic tones of ’90s alternative, June Body‘s rawness and forthright lyrical delivery throws back to the likes of Death Cab for Cutie and The Weakerthans.
“Take Our Time Back” is the latest single from the trio’s third album, Last Everythings (June 7th, 2024); a snow globe of the scenes before, during, and after a breakup. It is a venture into the subtle, heartbreaking domestic details of an ending.
“I ended a year-long relationship that I realized I wasn’t ready to be in from the start,” lead vocalist/guitarist Connor James elaborates about the new track. “I fell in love with a great person, but a voice in the back of my mind kept telling me it wasn’t meant to be. ‘Take Our Time Back’ is about the guilt of having to break their heart, and wondering if they’re wishing they could take back the time we had together.”
Recently, June Body performed sold-out shows including an opening slot for The Beaches.
1. What did you enjoy most about the recording process of this new release?
We built a studio in an ancient cottage in the middle of nowhere to track the new material. The isolation from our normal lives, and the comradery that came from sleeping around all of our gear undoubtedly made the songs better. It was great fun waking up at dawn feeling excited to get to work, tracking all day, and then swimming in the ocean at sunset.
2. Share a nugget of advice that has resonated with you most over the years.
I’ve always remembered something Jim Adkins from Jimmy Eat World said in an interview: “Incremental progress is the best we can hope for.” I made the mistake of setting extremely lofty goals for myself when I first started making music, and would get really disappointed when I wasn’t reaching those unrealistic milestones. Set achievable goals for yourself, and celebrate your successes, as small as they might seem.
3. Who would be your dream artist/band to co-headline a tour with?
At this point in time, I think touring as support for Cloud Nothings or PUP would be a dream come true. It’s an insane feeling knowing that that’s actually something that could be in reach. It certainly wasn’t a few years ago.
4. What sets your music apart from others in your genre?
I think that the way we maximize the dynamic opportunities a trio lineup affords sets us apart from other indie rock bands. We use bass guitar to drive melody and as a kind of lead guitar. I also think our melodies, song structures, and harmony choices are nothing like I’ve ever heard. People often come up to us after shows and are trying so hard to pin down who they think we sound like, but it’s often a struggle. I take that as a complement. We clearly thrive in ‘90s and ‘00s influences, but I think our songs have their own space in the indie rock landscape.
5. Tell us what your favourite song is at the moment and why.
“Feeling Like I Do” by Superdrag is our band’s pump-up song. We listen to it in the car before shows all the time. The guitar tone is so addictively crunchy, and the song just never lets up. The structure is genius–it maintains its energy the whole way through. The vocal melodies are some of the catchiest we’ve heard in a while too. A cover might be in order. Although we’ve been beaten to the punch on that front–check out Snail Mail’s cover of “Feeling Like I Do.”
