INTERVIEWS PORTLAND

Interview: Catching Up With Blossom + Watch “More Than”

One of the rising stars in Portland’s diverse music scene is the R&B artist Blossom. Not unlike recent break out stars like Noname or Jamila Woods, Blossom’s blend of smoothy silk vocals and conscious lyricism offers a window into her soul and experiences with all of the right vibes.

Today, Blossom is sharing a new video for “More Than” off of her forthcoming new album, Maybe, out May 30 on EYRST Records. To help get to know Blossom better, we sent her some interview questions to go along with the video.

Hi, Blossom! Congrats on your upcoming album. Can you tell us a little more on who you are and how you first got into making music?

I’m a 29, soon to be 30 singer! Started singing 6 years ago in basements and haven’t stopped since. I’ve been a musician – by ear – since 12 with my family and this is the first time I’ve stepped out and gone at it alone. I’m a big freakin’ nerd and I love to read and that really nourished my lust for songwriting.

What’s your songwriting process like? Who are some of your biggest influences?

As the years have progressed it’s changed a lot. In the beginning, I was writing first because I wasn’t working with any producers. I would go on Youtube or Soundclick and write to beats from there. After awhile, once I got established, I would link up with producers and write with them. Sometimes a beat of theirs would go with something I already have written or I would listen to their beats and write to them.

Lately, my producer and I have been creating together. I’ll start singing and he’ll build off it or he’ll give me an intro and we’ll go from there.

What is “More Than” about?

Late night lust! When we go out at night and we’re having a good time, you might let the liquor talk. More than is specifically about a couple’s interaction as the night is ending. “How could you want more than access to my tab, a free ride to my pad” aka I’m hooking you up and taking care of you tonight. Why don’t you wanna fuck with me?
