Hailing from the NYC/Philly area, indie rock band Basic Vacation has emerged out of the music trenches as a band to look out for.

Leading the way is their breakout single “I Believe,” and with an EP on the way, anticipation of great things to come is at a peak.

GroundSounds recently caught of with the trio Chris, Jon, and Mike after one of their rehearsals in Saddle Brook, New Jersey. Get acquainted with Basic Vacation and check out the interview below.

Were you guys just rehearsing? What is a typical practice like?

Yea we had a rehearsal today, so we’re just all here.  Today was a pretty prime example of a typical rehearsal. Today we worked on a middle part for one of our songs, an extended jam guitar solo. So what we will do is jam on the new part for the beginning of practice, then we will run through the set 3 or 4 times. If itere are anything wrong with one of the songs we will just go back and work on that song a bit and basically that’s it.  We will go for four or five hours a couple times a week.

Very cool – is this new extended jam guitar solo on a new song you guys are working on?

It’s on this EP we just finished, it’s called “It’s All Happening”, we’re just going to put a big climatic part in the middle of it. It actually starts and ends with big climatic parts too, it’s a pretty exciting song.

Can you tell us a little bit about your breakout track “I Believe,” was it based on a past relationship?

Basically when it was started, there had been a past relationship that Jon was involved in and that is where it kind of stemmed from.

However, at that same time we were starting this new band, and everyone we knew wasn’t taking us as seriously.  But when we started jamming and writing songs, we felt that there was something there- we believed.

It’s pretty cool that with that song it can be interpreted in a lot of ways. And a lot of people can relate to it, which is something we try to achieve in all of our songs.

Right on – is there a release date for this completed EP?

As of right now there is not, it is just going to be released sometime in the fall, we are looking at a 5 song EP.

How long have you guys been working on this EP?

It’s been a good amount a time. We spent a lot time trying to hone in on the sound. We started the actual recording process, last December. We went into a couple different studios recording with various people trying different things. We figured out basically how we wanted to do it, and then ultimately got the songs within the last 6 weeks. We got them mastered by our friend Eric Valentine and they are sounding pretty majestic right now.

Do you guys have a name for the EP?

It’s looking like it is going to be self titled, that makes the most sense.

You guys are about to go on tour, where are you headed?

Canada, Toronto, Montreal, Chicago, Philly area, it’s going to be a great time.  8 shows I think.  There has been a few whispers of some other stuff out West.  It might be confirmed actually, stay tuned.

What has it been like working with Capitol Records?

Capitol has been great! They are a really fun label; there are a lot of cool people up there that know a lot about youth culture and music.  They have also been really understanding of our musical ambitions and they haven’t tried to stifle us in any way.  They have been really open to working with us in every way and listening to our suggestions and stuff like that.

We are also working with Atom Factory, which is Troy Carter’s label. They have been helping us out a lot too, and it has been really nice.

What are you guys currently listening to?

Michael Jackson, Daft Punk, Chic- Nile Rodgers is obviously one of our biggest inspirations, we love the groove man.

We have also been listening to the New Radicals a lot, we actually just hung out with Greg Alexander the other night, which was a crazy experience.

Tears for Fears, Jellyfish, Queens of Stone Age….the list goes on!

Are you guys working on a music video for “I Believe”?

The music video for “I Believe” is coming out in October.  It is completed and is now just getting finished up; it was shot in Los Angeles.

We filmed it in this big venue, the space was real friendly with high ceilings,  it was a really cool experience!
