There is no doubt about it, front woman Chloe Chaidez is giving 80s glam rock a revival with her refreshing band Kitten. Blending 70s post punk with 80s new wave, the band recently dropped the fresh new EP ‘Like A Stranger’, and it has left us anticipating more. GroundSounds recently had the chance to catch up with Chloe for an exclusive interview check it out below!

Your EP Like A Stranger was just released, trust us we know! We at GroundSounds have had it on heavy rotation! Can you tell us about the creative process behind this project?

A lot of our demos stem from an electronic foundation and grow from there. I love the sounds of old keyboards like Juno’s , Jupiters and ARP’s. A lot of the songs really found their voice using those “tools”, if you will.

How did the band decide on the name Kitten?

Kitten sounded very classic and iconic to me, like Blondie or something. It also sounded a bit retro to me at the time, I love that too.

On your latest EP the track ‘Like A Stranger’ clearly stands out, what was the inspiration behind this song, how did it come together from start to finish?

Thank you! Glad you enjoy that song. Funny enough, considering the heavy synthesized final product, the song was written on an acoustic guitar. Soon thereafter we put a disco beat behind it, followed by some of our favorite 80’s synths sounds, and “Like A Stranger” was born.

Who are some of your favorite musicians and bands from the 80s?

oh that’s so hard. It’s not a secret, but most of my favorite bands are from late 70’s and early 80’s. Roxy Music, Tears for Fears, Missing Persons, The Eurythmics …

How do you guys create your music, do you typically start with a guitar riff, a beat, or just an idea/concept?

Lately, especially with our new record, a lot of the music has been stemming from ableton beats and vibes. I try to then bring the song to a place with the band where it can’t be labeled just as  purely an electronic song. For me that process end up bringing a bit more depth musically to the record.

What advice would you give to aspiring bands or musicians?

It’s all about the songs. Melody is key.

You guys will be on tour soon with Charli XCX, what do you enjoy most about being on the road?

hmm, I  really love touring so that’s hard. I’m gonna have to give the cliched lead singer answer and say that my favorite part of touring is seeing our fans every night and being able to hang out with them after shows.

Do you have a most memorable performance to date?

Probably opening for No Doubt, and our first show with Paramore. That said, I’ve also had a lot of great moments in tiny little sweaty clubs across the country…

What bands or musicians would you like to collaborate with in the future?

Another hard question, but right now I’d have to say Prince.

After you guys get off the road, what’s next? We heard that you guys were working on a new album. Is this true? What should fans expect from your next project?

Yup, a new record and more touring. Expect a masterpiece.
