In these turbulent times, I think we can all agree that we’re in need of some fresh air. Thankfully, Houston-based chamber rockers Mystery Loves Company are here to provide us with that heart-filling breath with their beautiful harmonies and uplifting aesthetic.

After serendipitously meeting at an open mic, the duo of Carlos A. Machado and Madeline Herdeman immediately found a kinship in crafting lush, intricate soundscapes with socially conscious messages. Now, Mystery Loves Company is preparing to the release the Revolutions EP with its latest single, “If Heaven,” premiering on GroundSounds today!

On the track, Machado and Herdeman weave an inspired sonic tapestry that shoots for the heights of its subject material. The band shares:

“When Carlos was a little boy, the concept of heaven really confused him. He figured if he was really good, he would be sent to this place in the sky forever, and it terrified him because he thought he’d get bored.

This little story was the impetus for the song and through it, we explored many of the misconceptions we have of heaven. Some listeners have since wondered if it was an ‘anti-heaven’ song, which is an interesting concept in and of itself because it shows how we sometimes approach our spirituality as a pro or con proposition.

We are hoping to generate a conversation and so far it has caused the most interaction from listeners out of any song we’ve written before. It’s interesting because people from vastly different religious or non-religious backgrounds come up to us and say ‘That’s exactly how I feel!'”
